 Luke 18:9-14

"Prayers of the Saints. Prayers of the Sinners."

This passage from Luke follows immediately upon the passage from October 16. Both have to do with prayer. Last week, Jesus called upon his followers to be faithful and persistent in their prayers. Here he balances that message with a story about a sinner's prayer.

Both kinds of prayers are causes for rejoicing. In this latter story, the emphasis is on the fallacy of trying to establish one's own righteousness. The message is especially meant for us when we trust in our own goodness or despise others in their failures.
Grant Us Discerning Minds

I know that many of you, like me, are looking forward to the end of a long and nasty campaign season. This coming Monday, October 24, we will have our first opportunity for early voting here in Texas. We will have 12 days to vote in person prior to Election Day.

A number of states started their early voting many days ago. I think it is interesting that millions of votes will be cast before November 8th. It is estimated that about 1/3 of all voting will take place before November 8th. These voters will have less information about the candidates. Those that have already voted, for example, have not yet viewed the third and final debate between the presidential candidates, which will be televised tomorrow. However, I've read that most people have their minds made up long before Election Day. People vote early, not just because they want to avoid crowds on Election Day, but also because they have made up their minds and are ready to cast their vote and express their will.

As you prepare to go to the polls, I offer this prayer, which I've adapted from Chalice Worship.

God of heaven and earth, Lord of every nation, we pray for your guidance as we approach the time to elect those who will next serve the nation in public office.  Grant us discerning minds. Give us strength to strive for justice. Fill our hearts with love for the peace you alone give, that we may be at peace with one another.

May our individual lives serve the good of all the people of our land and beyond its shores. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Peace in Christ,
Pastor Mitch

Need a Ride to the Polls?

Your Vote Counts!
Thank YOU!

A big Thank You to everyone who contributed toward the purchase of student gift cards for Hopewell Middle School students! $180 in donations were received and used to purchase 36 gift cards!

Hopewell principals use these gift cards as incentives and rewards for students needing to improve in areas of self-management and academics. Rebecca Haynes serves as the Hopewell Interim Principal and she was thrilled to receive the donation. Her comment was that Middle School students experience a huge range of emotions and adjustments and these types of incentives and rewards play an important role in keeping students on track and engaged in school.

Thank you for your help in "Embracing Our Neighbors with Christ-Like Love!"
Trunk N Treat is Back!  Monday, October 31st -
CANDY NEEDED!

It's officially October and that means the official countdown to Trunk N Treat can begin!

It's time to start thinking of ways that you'll decorate your trunk and dress up to distribute candy and have fun with our neighbors!

If you are on Facebook, please go to the Round Rock Christian Church Facebook page and share the event with your friends!

We are in need of candy donations!  You can drop them off in the Welcome Center in the blue tub.  Also, there is a signup board to sign up to volunteer the night of Trunk N Treat.  Sign up Sunday!'

Some great news:  The HEB Plus in Round Rock has generously donated gift cards to RRCC to purchase the food!  What a great sponsor for our event!  A community is working together!
Youth News

We have a fun Sunday coming up for Youth Group!  After Church we will be going to Old Settlers Park to play some baseball.  We did this last year and had SO much fun.  Please bring comfortable clothes and shoes for playing on the fields.  If you have a bat or glove, please bring them!  If you have extras, we could use them to share.

Lunch will be provided.  It should be nice weather for being outdoors.  We will be finished and back to Church by 2:30pm for pick up.  See you then!

Food Pantry Focus for October:  Heat N Eat Meals

"...for I was hungry and you gave me food. Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." (Matthew 25:35, 40)

This month is "Heat N Eat Meals" month at RRCC. Let's load our food pantry tub in the Welcome Center to overflowing each Sunday! Your donations of Heat N Eat Meals (or cash or check designated for the Round Rock Area Serving Center) will help stock empty shelves and help  neighbors in our community.

Are you wondering, "what exactly is a heat n eat meal?"  Well, think food items that can be quickly warmed up on the stove or in the microwave, such as:  spaghetti o's, ravioli, soups, etc.
You're Invited!

Shake It Of f

Let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight)...and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us
- Hebrews 12:1

One of my favorite stories is about a farmer's donkey that fell into a dry well. The animal cried pitifully for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do for his poor donkey. Finally, he concluded that the well was too deep, and it really needed to be covered up anyway. Besides, the donkey was old, and it would be a lot of trouble to get him out of the pit. The farmer decided that it was not worth trying to retrieve the animal, so he asked his neighbors to help him fill in the well and bury the donkey.

They all grabbed shovels and began to toss dirt into the well. The donkey immediately realized what was happening, and he began to bray horribly. Crying would be our normal response if somebody was mistreating us this badly, so this donkey was responding the same way we would at first, but then he got real quiet. A few shovel loads of dirt later, the farmer looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit the donkey's back, the donkey would shake it off and step on top of it.

As the neighbors and the farmer continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he continued to shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon the donkey shook off the last shovel full of dirt, took a step up, and walked right out of the well. We can learn from this story. When trouble comes, if we will get still and listen, God will tell us what to do. By the grace and mercy of God, I was able to shake off a lot of things in my life, a lot of hurt feelings, a lot of mistreatment, a lot of abuse, a lot of unfair, unjust, unkind things. Just like the donkey, in order to keep pressing on and have victory in our lives, we are going to have to learn to shake off the troubles that come our way.
