2015 Business Expo
Every year around the celebration of National Small Business Week, the Dyersburg/Dyer County Chamber of Commerce hosts our Annual Business Expo as a way to showcase and celebrate the businesses and entrepreneurs in our community. This year's Business Expo was held on Thursday, May 14 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Lannom Center. The annual event gives area businesses the opportunity to showcase their services and network with potential clients and customers. With almost 60 businesses and vendors there and record-breaking attendance from the public, this year's Business Expo was a huge success.
"This year was another sell-out event. This year was particularly good because we had a steady
flow of good traffic all afternoon long. From start to finish we had a big crowd and everything went smoothly," said Chamber of Commerce CEO Allen Hester. "This is a great networking event for all of our members."
Along with the door prizes given away by each vendor, the Chamber gave away several door prizes. This year the Chamber gave away a $100 Visa Gift Card, a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, and three cash prizes of $200, $300, and $500! The winner of this year's biggest cash prize was Amy Whitnel from Hexpol.

WWII Living History at Discovery Park of America
World War II ended 70 years ago, lasted six years and claimed more than 60 million lives from 1939 until 1945, making it the deadliest conflict in modern history. Most baby boomers grew up hearing war stories from their grandparents, who are now in their 80s and 90s, or are no longer alive. For younger Americans, WWII is perhaps one of the most life changing chapters in their history textbook.
Discovery Park of America and Union City Coca Cola, event sponsor, bring history to life as they invite you to attend WWII Living History on the Great Lawn Memorial Weekend. This Memorial weekend event will pay tribute to the 70th anniversary of the war's end and the people who fought in it. Whether you are a senior citizen coming to reminisce, or a parent hoping to find a unique way to educate your child or teenager, it is an opportunity not to be missed. The WWII Living History encampment May 23rd through the 25th will be open during regular park hours, 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. each day. Guests will experience the sights and sounds of WWII as the Marines of 2/8 Easy Company show what life looked like during the battle of Okinawa, the last major battle of the war. The presentation will consist of infantry men, their personal weapons, equipment, effects and WWII era vehicles. An M5A1 Stuart Tank is one of the highlight attractions. There will be at least two weapon demonstrations daily.
According to CEO, Jim Rippy, all military will be admitted free on Memorial Day. The park, which is usually closed on Mondays, will open regular hours on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th. Wrapping up the weekend, there will be a special ceremony on Memorial Day at 2:00 p.m. featuring WWII veteran Charles Whitby as guest speaker. Whitby will share stories of his first-hand experiences during the war. There will be special seating for all WWII Veterans at the ceremony. In addition to Whitby's speech and special recognition of our visiting Veterans, a 21- gun salute is planned and singing of The National Anthem will close the commemorative ceremony.
Organizer Chris Gunlefinger, Assistant Education Director at Discovery Park, says that we will announce the final schedule of events closer to the weekend. "In the meantime, everyone should mark their calendar and plan to come out at least one of the three days and talk with these historians," Gunlefinger said. "They are truly WWII experts and can answer almost any question you throw at them about the war," he added.
Later this year, the park has commissioned an Alvin York traveling exhibit. The York exhibit will be on display from October 1st through December 31st in the Reelfoot Room, and is sponsored by Centerpoint Business Solutions. The York exhibit will also appeal to historians or anyone interested in history or learning more about specific wars or battles. "These special military focused events really compliment our Military Gallery, which is one of the most popular galleries in Discovery Center," Rippy stated.
Discovery Park is located at 830 Everett Blvd. in Union City, TN. You can see the 2015 Calendar of Events, including upcoming educational and entertaining events, by visiting the website at www.discoveryparkofamerica.com . The park is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and is a unique blend of history, science, architecture, art and fun.
