The Chamber Salutes this year's Spring Banquet Winners

John T. "Jiggs" Lenahan - Distinguished Citizen of the Year

Jiggs serves the residents of Salem County as Prosecutor and is a leader in the Law Enforcement Community.

Over the past 25 years Jiggs,  has volunteered his time with "too many to count" youth and civic organizations and non-profits. His dedication to coaching youth sports like football, baseball and yes - even soccer, as his sons grew up was exemplary. His involvement and leadership in these many organizations bonded him to both his local community and the County as a whole.

When offered the opportunity to further serve his local communities and fellow citizens this individual then decided to leave a successful law practice and enter the field of law enforcement as the Salem County Prosecutor. Or "Top Cop" as some of us like to refer to him.

Given his honesty, integrity, ethics and high moral standards this seemed a natural fit. His decision to lend his leadership skills to the Prosecutors office has most certainly served to strengthen the Salem County community as a whole. I am certain that being in this line of work while ultimately rewarding, has its fair share of frustration and depressing circumstances on a daily basis. He and his team handle issues that we never see or hear about. Yet, he and his team continue to work tirelessly for us to make Salem County a safer place to live and work. For that we offer our heartfelt thanks for I am sure they don't hear the words "thank you" often enough.

Kim Gattuso, Dry Guys - Small Business Leader of the Year Winner

Kim has been with Dry Guys Basement Systems since 2006, and was promoted from generic office staff to Call Center Lead (2007) to Marketing Coordinator (2009) and as of 2011 has also taken on the task of Human Resources and Team Building within the Company. She handles the Case Studies and Job Site photos as well as working with Justin in the Marketing Department to accomplish branding and the tracking of all marketing campaigns.

On a personal note, Kim is on the Board of Directors for both Family Promise of Salem County and Habitat for Humanity of Salem County.  She is on the Business Education Committee for the Chamber of Commerce and is the Educational Coordinator for Mullica Hill Networkers and an Ambassador within the BNI organization. She is also very active as a Ladies Auxiliary member for the Army Navy Unit #53 out of National Park, NJ. She is originally from Camden County, but currently resides in the Carneys Point area.

Kim has consistently demonstrated her dedication to the small business community by volunteering on The Chamber Business Education committee.  Kim has been instrumental in developing The 2nd Friday Business Education Workshops, sharing her expertise in marketing by teaching several of the workshops.

FURever Friends is proud to announce that we will be holding a "Fee Waived Adoption Event" until April 15, 2014. There will be no monetary charge for the rescues in our program. We do ask that you help support the organization by bringing in a large bag of dog food, a large bag of cat food, or a large bag of clumping cat litter.

All animals that are adopted out have been spayed or neutered and have received their necessary vaccines. Our final goal of this adoption event is to... find homes for the loving rescues we have in our care.

FURever Friends is very strict on their adoption process and each of the potential adopters will have to be approved through that same policy. The adoptions for this event are required to be scheduled through our Adoption Coordinator, Kristen. She can be reached directly at 856-275-1744 or by email at [email protected]

You can also schedule an appointment through Debbie at 856-905-9202. If you have any questions, contact us at 856-275-1744, 856-905-9202 or by email at [email protected].

Meet Neveah. She has been with us for over a year. She needs to find a FURever home or a foster home. She is approximately 3 years old. We are unsure of her breed. If you can foster her, please give us a call.

HEALTH CARE LAW OFFERS NEW INSURANCE OPTIONS FOR SMALL EMPLOYERS

Trying to find health insurance for your employees?

Check out the Small Business Health Options Program-SHOP-part of the new Health Insurance Marketplace. The SHOP Marketplace gives you a choice of quality, private health insurance plans, and information and tools to help your compare them and choose the one that works best for your company and your employees.

In many states, you can enroll in SHOP coverage directly through an agent, broker or a health insurance company that offers a SHOP Qualified Health Plan-much the way many small employers get insurance today.

When you buy coverage through the SHOP Marketplace, you may also qualify for a tax credit worth up to 50 percent of your contributions to employee premium costs (up to 35 percent for tax-exempt employers.) Small employers have already received more than $1 billion in tax credits since this tax credit was created in 2010.

Detailed information on the SHOP Marketplace is available at Health Care.gov.

The new health law and small employers

You're not required to offer health insurance under the health care law if you have fewer than 50 employees, nor is there any penalty if you don't.

But you can buy insurance through the SHOP Marketplace if you have 50 or fewer full-time employees, and you offer insurance to all full-time employees (generally those working 30 or more hours a week.)

Every plan in the SHOP Marketplace covers a comprehensive set of benefits, including doctor visits, hospital stays, preventive care, and prescriptions.

And new rules require these plans to treat you fairly; insurance companies can't raise premiums for the group just because of an employee's preexisting health condition or because an employee gets sick or injured, and there are new limits on charging small groups higher premiums for older employees.

How to buy coverage through the SHOP

For 2014, in most states, you'll enroll in SHOP coverage directly with an agent, broker or insurance company that offers a SHOP Qualified Health Plan. However, states that are running their own SHOP Marketplaces will have their own enrollment processes. Health Care.gov can

direct you to the correct website for your state.

An agent, broker or insurer can help you find and compare SHOP health plans, give you exact prices and help your employees enroll when you're ready. They can also help you fill out and send in a paper application for SHOP eligibility to the SHOP Marketplace.

You can also find plan information, a Premium Estimation Tool and download an application for SHOP eligibility on HealthCare.gov.

You don't need to wait to hear back from the SHOP Marketplace about your eligibility before enrolling. But if you want to apply for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit, you will need to get a notice of your SHOP eligibility before you file your returns for tax year 2014.

If your employees enroll in the SHOP plan you select by December 23, your coverage can take effect on January 1. But you can enroll at any time throughout the year for coverage that takes effect later.

If you have questions about what the SHOP Marketplace offers or how to apply, n visit HealthCare.gov or call the SHOP Employer Call Center toll-free at 1-800-706-7893 (1-800-706-7915 - TTY.) Tell the customer service representative if you need help in a language other than English.

The Salem County Historical Society's Open House in Fenwick's Colony tour committee is pleased to announce that plans for the annual spring open house tour are well under way.  This year the tour will be held on Saturday, May 3rd, from 10a.m. to 4p.m.  Tickets are just $15 prior to day of the tour.

In honor of our state's 350th anniversary, the Open House in Fenwick's Colony tour will be participating in the yearlong schedule of events celebrating our great state.  New Jersey began in 1664 as a royal gift.  When John Fenwick and his company arrived in 1673 they found a place that was already relatively diverse in its inhabitants.  In addition to Native American populations, Swedish and Dutch settlers had made the journey to what would become the Garden State.  Certainly the architecture found in Salem County reflects this great diversity and rich history, few places in our nation can boast of the gems found right here and the 2014 tour will highlight a few of those gems.

This year 25 private homes and sites will be open to visitors.  Join us to see the Oldest Working Farm in New Jersey, the oldest religious organization with continuous service in New Jersey, the oldest continuously operating courthouse in New Jersey(the second oldest in the United States) and a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Returning to the tour after many years is Obisquahassit, located on Sinnickson Lane in Pennsville.  The land was purchased by Anders Seneca from Chief Qbisquahassit in 1640.  Family members lived in log type housing until the 1670's when a brick kiln was constructed and work began on the earliest part of the current structure.  The farm remained in the Sinnickson family until 1973 and is still considered New Jersey's oldest working farm and Salem County's oldest residence.  Currently owned and farmed by Lisa and Patrick Lloyd (not descendants of Anders Seneca), the land remains a family-owned and operated farm.  The farm business is now called Obis One whose flagship product is organic black garlic.

And don't forget Salem Meeting's Annual Pot Pie dinner following the tour.  Call for tickets - 935-3540 or 678-8143.

Please be sure to mark your calendars for May 3rd and join us as we celebrate New Jersey's 350th anniversary and the Salem County Historical Society's 130th anniversary!  Contact the Society for more information and tickets at (856) 935-5006 or [email protected].   Thank you and hope to see you in May!
