President's Message
Next Wednesday, February 8th, marks crossover day for the 2017 General Assembly session. Crossover day is the mid-point in session, after which each house is only allowed to hear bills that originated in the other. The week leading up to crossover is always very busy as both the House and the Senate work to finalize their respective bills. This week alone, our Government Affairs team has testified at more than 20 committee meetings.
Much of the work our team does during session is to defeat bad bills that would have a negative impact on Virginia's business climate and/or increase the cost of doing business.
You can always keep up with what our team is working on by checking our Bills We're Watching, which is updated daily. There, you'll see the bills we track sorted by subject area with our position marked beside each. You can also click on each bill number for a link to the full bill summary or to see the current status of bills that may interest you.
Next week, the House and Senate will also be finalizing their respective versions of the budget. We plan to provide you with an update next week on where we are at this year's session's halfway point.
As we begin to look toward the spring, I hope you'll mark your calendars for our upcoming events. Registration information and more details regarding the agendas will be available soon

Virginia's Population Growth Slow, But Still Ahead of National Rate
Each year, UVA's Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service produces official population estimates for Virginia's cities and counties.
In an article published this week, highlights of this year's study showed that in recent years, Virginia's population growth has slowed significantly, matching national and regional trends. Fewer people moving into Virginia has contributed to the slower pace of growth. For the past three years, more people have moved from Virginia to other states than have moved into the commonwealth.
"Though the federal budget sequestration has likely contributed to the slow growth, most mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states have also experienced a rise in out-migration as more of the baby boomers reach retirement age," said Hamilton Lombard, a research associate who prepared the population estimates. "Popular retirement states, such as Florida and South Carolina, have seen their population growth accelerate in recent years."

Trump Signs 2-for-1 Order Aimed at Reducing Regulations
On Monday, President Trump signed an executive order that would require 2 regulations to be revoked for every 1 new regulation that is put on the books. The goal of the executive order is to roll back federal regulations. According to The Hill.com, Trump told reporters that he "isn't done targeting regulations, reiterating his campaign promise to try and cut 75% of rules."
