We're just a week away from presenting one of the Grand Traverse region's most-prestigious honors - crowning the Chamber's 2016 Hagerty Small Business of the Year.

The 2016 Hagerty Small Business of the Year will not only join an impressive list of past SBC winners, but also receive 40 hours of executive/staff training and up to a $5,000 charitable donation match from Hagerty, the Traverse City-based world-wide leader in classic car and boat insurance. Cleland Named Administrative Professional of the Year 
It wouldn't take long for things to grind to a halt at the Traverse City Area Chamber without the hard work and professionalism of our long-time Executive Assistant Caryn Cleland.  She was honored today by the Northern Michigan Administrative Professionals as the local 2016 Administrative Professional of the Year at a luncheon at Northwestern Michigan College's Hagerty Center. Chamber Endorses Costco Project
The Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce this week endorsed zoning amendments to enable a new Costco store to be built on the grounds of the Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City. The Costco project will not only bring new jobs and tax base to the city, but also provide the airport with a creative and much-needed revenue source for airport operations.

The Chamber and TraverseCONNECT collaborated with the Traverse City Record-Eagle on a business tabloid called Momentum highlighting the region's dynamic business sector published in the paper's April 24 Sunday edition. The Soo Locks

Metro Chambers Back Soo Locks Upgrade
The Great Lakes Metro Chamber Coalition, a regional organization of more than 40 chambers across the Midwest and Upper Great Lakes that include the Traverse City Area Chamber and Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance, is gaining momentum in its efforts to bring upgrades to the Soo Locks. The issue was discussed during the Coalition's recent legislative fly-in with Congressional representatives in Washington.  There's more information in this Northern Michigan Business Blog from Chamber/Alliance Government Relations Director Kent Wood.

Anne Bonney Returns for Leadership at the Movies
What do you after a terrific cinematic production? You make a sequel, of course!

Leadership guru Anne Bonney returns for the May 12 screening of Leadership at the Movies, the Chamber's unique and entertaining leadership development program that illustrates life lessons through scenes from classic films. Bonney's first program produced the biggest "Leadership...." turnout yet and a lively discussion on pertinent leadership skills.

This session is entitled "The First Step to Great Leadership is Self Leadership" featuring clips from the British-American comedy Yes Man starring Jim Carrey.  The program starts at 7:30 a.m. and is free to Chamber members , and includes continental breakfast. It's a great way to start the work day with an inspiring professional development message. Sign up now.

City Officials on Tap for 'Pints...'

Rothwell to Speak at Venture North Annual Meeting
One of Michigan's leading voices for business will highlight this year's Annual Meeting of Venture North Funding & Development. Doug Rothwell, President and CEO of Business Leaders for Michigan, is the guest speaker for the event that's scheduled for June 14 at 11:30 a.m. at Visions at CenterPointe at 12935 S. West Bay Shore Drive in Greilickville.

Rothwell will discuss Michigan's business climate and where the state's business sector is headed, while Venture North Executive Director Laura Galbraith will present an overview of the last year of activity. Tickets are $15 and you can register here
