Chamber Business Expo, coming up
November 8 at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. Just a handful of exhibit spaces remain available. Register now to make sure you're part of the region's largest business showcase.

The Business Expo includes more than 150 exhibitors from area businesses, community institutions and non-profit organizations displaying their people, goods and services to more than 1,300 Expo-goers. Mark your calendars to join us between 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. in resort's Governor's Hall for this special event.

Thanks to your support this year's Economic Outlook Breakfast is SOLD OUT!  We're looking forward to an informative program analyzing the business forecast in Michigan from Chris Holman of the Michigan Business Network, and a review of the unprecedented 2016 election season from Lansing-based political consultant Sarah Hubbard.

Virtual Candidate Forum Updated
With the November 8 general election fast approaching, Chamber Government Relations Director Kent Wood has been busy updating the content on the Virtual Candidate Forum.The digital candidate forum has questions-and-answer sections for candidates in the First and Fourth District U.S. House races, and for state House seats in the 101 st , 102 nd , 103 rd , 104 th , 105 th , 106 th and 107 th districts. Check out where the candidates stand on issues important to Northern Michigan and our business community.

Plus, the Virtual Candidate Forum will be updated soon with videos from the First Congressional race for the U.S. House, and with Q-and-A responses from candidates running for Northwestern Michigan College's Board of Trustees.  Keep following Chamber communications for when those sections will go live on the candidate forum.

Speaker Series Returns October 21
The Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance  Speaker Series returns Friday,
October 21, to highlight the importance of the Great Lakes Maritime industry to the region, and completing construction on a new lock at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie.

Register here for the program, which takes place from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy at Northwestern Michigan College's Hagerty Center.  Speakers will include Mark Barker, President of the Interlake Steamship Co., Maritime Academy Supt. Jerry Achenbach and Soo Locks Engineer Kevin Sprague. The event is free to Chamber and Alliance members, and wraps up with a reception with area legislators.

Business After Hours Next Week
The fall season of  Business After Hours continues a week from today as we head to Grand Traverse Ophthalmology Clinic for our monthly post-workday business networking and social event.  Join us next Wednesday, October 19, at GTOC headquarters at 929 Business Park Drive in Traverse City from 5 - 7 p.m.

Hone Your Leadership at the YP Conference
The Chamber's Young Professionals Conference coming up November 4 will feature some of the community's top leadership development experts and promises a full day of 5-star professional skill building.

  Register now for the conference, set for 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. at NMC's Hagerty Center. It includes a keynote address from McKeel Hagerty, President and CEO of Hagerty Insurance, along with break-out sessions featuring dynamic presentations from Anne Bonney, Nathan Havey and Jennifer VanAlstine.

This year's conference includes a program specifically designed for employers of young professionals on how to build a workplace culture where YPs can thrive. Havey, a member of the Chamber board's Leadership Committee, will present this 2:30 - 4 p.m. session, which is free to Chamber member businesses. Register here for that portion of the conference.

The YP Conference includes breakfast and lunch, plus a closing reception.  The cost is $100 for YPs and Chamber members, and $125 for non-members who are also welcome.

Northwest Michigan is home to hundreds of successful small businesses, both new and old. Each week on the Chamber's  Weekly Entrepreneur Focus on NewsTalk 580, WTCM-AM host Ron Jolly and the Chamber's Bill O'Brien sit down on Wednesday morning at 8:35 a.m.  with a local entrepreneur to talk about their business. They discuss their original plan and where they are today - and all the exciting and trying times in between. It's an eye-opening program that offers lessons and knowledge for any business person.

Leadership Lunch Club Series Returns
The Leadership Lunch Club  series for 2016-17 features another all-star line-up of business leaders and their success stories. It starts with the November 4 kick-off program featuring Josh Kent, Founder and CEO of Michigan-based SunFrog Shirts. It's from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.  at the Traverse City Golf & Country Club.

Kent has grown SunFrog into a $100 million company with more than 400 employees - the largest t-shirt company in the U.S. In his presentation, entitled "Driving Explosive Business Growth," Kent will explain how he's leveraged technology and social media to drive revenue and web traffic. To know where Michigan's business sector is going, it's important to track where it's been. The Michigan Future Business Index Survey from our friends at the Michigan Business Network is a tool to track business trends through the participation of hundreds of small businesses throughout the state. Research is underway on the Fall 2016 edition of the Index Survey.
