Family Violence Project
We are hosting, for the fourth year, a Reading and Discussion Group, and we hope you will join us!  This exciting venture is sponsored and facilitated by the Maine Humanities Council in partnership with Family Violence Project. We hope that you will join with us - It would be wonderful to have your perspective in the group.
The reading and discussion group is for a range of professionals in our community who may have different jobs but who all care for domestic violence survivors in some manner, either directly or indirectly. Since it supports us, it also serves the survivors we care for.
It is offered in partnership with the Maine Humanities Council (MHC), an independent, state-wide, nonprofit organization. Our group is based on the MHC award winning program for health care professionals called  Literature and Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Health Care ®  offered across Maine that was recognized as an exemplary humanities based program at the White House in 2011.
This is an opportunity to dig into pervasive social and cultural dis-ease (oppression and violence) and to celebrate stories of lived experiences and survival through a literary lens. We do this in a comfortable group setting of our coworkers and community partners, with a knowledgeable and familiar facilitator, Susan Beegel.

We will meet on four Monday afternoons: March 19, April 23, May 21, and June 18 from 3:00-5:00pm at the Family Violence Project conference room, 83 Western Avenue, Augusta. FVP will provide light snacks and beverages.

We always invite and look forward to community partners joining us, as we seek to really stretch our brains and challenge our own entrenched beliefs. We ask MHC to challenge us with readings that may facilitate such a mental exercise, and we depend upon our facilitator to ask questions that encourage us to step outside of our safe assumptions. We read in our own time and come together to discuss and share and question and grow. Please see this year's syllabus, attached.

We can accommodate up to 20 group participants, and I will keep a list of those interested and use a methodology of first-come, first-listed.

If you have received this email message and you are one of our community partners, please share the invitation with your staff and co-workers as well!

Please rsvp to them no later than March 5th so that I can arrange to send or have you pick up your reading materials in advance of the first session. I will also need two ways to contact you, which might include phone, text and email. If I send the novels to you, I'll need your mailing address too.

We are so pleased to continue this annual literary adventure with our partners at the Maine Humanities Council! Please do join us, if you like a great read and an opportunity to think and share discussion with others

Family Violence Project
Abuse is not always physical. Tactics of power and control are very debilitating to people in a relationship with an abusive partner. This may be emotional abuse such as put downs and insults, belittling their family, hopes and dreams, or by “gaslighting” - doing different things to make their partner feel crazy. Financial abuse and isolation are also common ways to exert control over a partner.

Franklin-Somerset FCU
Franklin-Somerset Federal Credit Union’s humble beginnings began as Bass Shoe Federal Credit Union with 8 members – six women and two men, each with a share of $5.00, on August 6, 1962. Since then, our charter has changed a bit and our field of membership grown. In the seventies, Bass Shoe Federal Credit Union became Wilton Community, then Franklin County Federal Credit Union. The eighties saw Bennett Importing FCU and Mt. Blue FCU merging with Franklin County Federal Credit Union, and a new branch built in Kingfield. Skowhegan Community FCU merged with Franklin County in 2000, and Madison-Anson followed in 2002, for our present day field of membership to include all of Franklin and Somerset Counties, and our current branch locations in Farmington, Kingfield, Skowhegan and Madison. We now have over 10,400 members in our credit union family!
