MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
|
I'd like to take a moment to welcome two new members to our Board of Directors. During the summer Frances Riley of The Argosy joined us bringing with her a valuable and unique perspective in our discussions. This month Rob Gruber of Good Times Games and Electronics also joined us. Both Frances and Rob are phenomenal resources in our Community, both as Small Business owners and as local leaders and bring a wealth of experience and important perspective as retailers in our region. This month, as many of you know, is Small Business Month one of our most important celebrations as a Chamber of Commerce. We wouldn't exist without our Small Business Members and the work they do, the people they employ and services they provide are the backbone and lifeblood of every community.
Thank you to all the Small Businesses that make Prince Rupert, Port Edward and all the surrounding communities the amazing places they are!
Is there information you would like to see or something you would like to learn about? Please drop me an email
.
Sincerely,
Rosa Miller
President
Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce

OCTOBER CHAMBER LUNCH |
Join the Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce at our October Luncheon.
In Collaboration with the BC Chamber of Commerce we have a presentation from
Brian Lee Crowley, Managing Director of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, a national public policy think tank based in Ottawa.
One of the hottest issues in the natural resource economy as well as for major project proponents in any field today is 'social licence': who has it, who needs it, who can get it. But what if social licence has become a Trojan horse, giving project opponents powerful but undemocratic authority to obstruct economic development and defy the law and our legitimate institutions? And what can be done about it? Come and hear Brian Lee Crowley, head of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and Canada's leading commentator on social licence.

TIME: 11:45 am - 1:30 pm

JINGLE BOAT EXPRESS |
Jingle Boat Express
The rebranded Jingle Boat Express launched in December 2014 to great acclaim in the community of Prince Rupert. Over 250
children and family members boarded a holiday-themed vessel captained by West Coat Launch; the event was complete with a visit from Santa, goodie bags, holiday music and a maritime cruise around Prince Rupert's harbour for the excited children. Many local businesses pitched in by adding items to the goodie bags that were given out by Santa and his team of volunteer elves.
The Jingle Boat Express in 2014 was organized by 3 main partners; Prince Rupert Port Authority, Success by 6 and Northern Savings Credit Union. A number of other supporting organizations came on board to add strength to the event including West Coast Launch, Tim Hortons and the Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce. A group of businesses in town also graciously donated to the goodie bags for the children or supported the event in other ways.
On December 10, 2015 we are looking to host the event again and expand the number of sailings to bring the number of participating children and families above the 300 mark. The price point for tickets has been set at a very modest $5 per passenger to allow all families in Prince Rupert and our outlying communities the opportunity to access the event. Additionally, all funds from ticket sales are donated to the Salvation Army to buy presents for children in our community.
This year, we are looking to bring on 7 Sailing Sponsors to join our partnership team to host the 2nd Annual Jingle Boat Express. We have already had interest from 2 organizations, and as such have 5 Sailing Sponsor openings still available to organizations with a donation amount of $500 to the event. All Sailing Sponsors will have their logo included on poster materials, online advertising and acknowledged during speeches on the day of the event.
If you are interested in participating and supporting the Jingle Boat Express as a Sailing Sponsor or donating to the goodie bags, please contact any of the names listed below. In order to ensure that logo recognition occurs on the initial poster, expressions of interest for sponsorship need to be received by Friday, October 16th. Goodie bag items will be needed by December 4th a total of 250 items per donor and due to restrictions on the boat, we are not asking for any food or drink items at this time. These items can be dropped off at the Port Interperative Centre (Tuesday - Saturday, 11:00 to 5:00pm). We are very excited to be planning this great community event once again and are looking forward to seeing some very happy children with Santa this December.
Sincerely,
The Jingle Boat Express Organizing Team

|
In this edition of
5 Minutes for Business
, Hendrik Brakel, Senior Director, Economic, Financial and Tax Policy, Canadian Chamber of Commerce, looks at the importance of the economy in our current electoral campaign.
Normally at election time, nobody cares much about fiscal policy or whether GDP is up or down. But this is not a normal election. Instead, it has been wracked throughout by a series of economic shocks that have sent political strategists scrambling. Who would have believed that economics could be so exciting? From deficits that turn into surpluses to the TPP, the economy has been front and centre in the past 10 weeks. Will it affect the choice of Canadians next week? Read 5 Minutes for Business to find out.
