OCTOBER- TOURISM NEWS

What is UnionPay?
Last month, our tourism staff had the opportunity to attend the I Love NY International Marketing Forum.  We heard from representatives in the ILNY offices of UK, China, Germany and Australia markets as well as a presentation from China's UnionPay International representative.  The forum was very helpful in providing us with action steps to increase our international marketing efforts.

The Chinese market in particular is growing rapidly in our region, which is why we need to consider UnionPay.  This is the only national bankcard association in China established under the approval of the State Council and the People's Bank of China.  Therefore, it has 100% domestic Chinese familiarity.  Many of you are likely already set up to accept this form of payment - if your business accepts Discover, than you can accept UnionPay - your only action step would be to display UnionPay branding along with your other accepted forms of payment so that Chinese visitors feel confident in using their card at your location.  We are working with UnionPay International to acquire appropriate signage, but in the meantime we would recommend downloading this logo and taping it up with your other payment signage.  To learn more about UnionPay click HERE.

New Tourism Intern
Hi, my name is Jena DeFazio -
I am currently a student at Genesee Community College.  I am in my 2nd year of pursuing a degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management.  My plan is to graduate in May of 2017. As part of my program, I am interning at the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce in the Tourism Marketing department.  I love traveling; I especially enjoy cruising.  My hope is to eventually work for a cruise line, but I am interested in getting a feel for a little bit of everything in the field.  I would love to learn more about travel agencies, hotel operations, guest services, and more!

Looking Ahead to "The Move"
As we begin to plan out our visitor center displays and distribution materials, we would like for all of our accommodations, restaurants, retailers and area attractions to make available to us your "rack card".  Beginning this fall, Genesee County hospitality businesses will receive free marketing through our visitor center brochure racks.   Only 4 x9 (card stock) rack cards will be distributed at the information center.  To reserve your spot for your business please contact Kelly Rapone. We can also assist you in finding a professional designer, as well as sourcing printing quotes. Only pre-approved rack cards will be made available through the visitor center.  Once we have our list of designated slots we will be in contact with you to receive quantities.  Additionally, we are planning to develop the "mini menus" program for our restaurant partners. More information on that will be made available in the coming weeks.
Genesee County Business Education Alliance
Hand the Tools over to Our Future Workforce!

The Business Education Alliance (BEA), whose mission is to foster a partnership between business and education, and to assist students in preparing for the world of work, wants your tools! In order to educate our youth on the various pathways available to them within our county, the BEA needs several resources from all career fields. Programs such as Junior Achievement, business tours for students and teachers, job shadow opportunities, mock interviews, career exploration camps, career fairs and classroom speakers expose our young people to a variety of careers and workforce experience. Let's fill their toolboxes and create a future workforce that we can be proud of!

Local businesses, companies and organizations are encouraged to get involved in leading our next generation and providing them the tools needed for success. If you would like to be a Junior Achievement volunteer, offer a job shadow, allow students into your work place, or speak to students in their classroom please contact BEA Director Beth Kemp at 343-7440 x25 or bkemp@geneseeNY.com.

When we come together and allow numerous opportunities for our youth to be exposed to careers in our area, we create a generation that will be more mindful, make more educated decisions and continue to make Genesee County great! What tools can you provide?
