Business of the Month - Dengel & Son Mortuary - Crematory
Grandfather (Louis), father (Walt), and now son (Craig), the Dengel family
has served families in the funeral profession since 1947. Louis Dengel, the founder of our family funeral home, purchased the McVey Mortuary in Ottawa, Kansas. He had the occasion to rename the funeral home in 1961
to Dengel and Son Mortuary, when his son, Walter, graduated from college and joined
him in the business. The name remains appropriate today since Walter's son, Craig, joined his father in business after graduating from
college in 1983.
Louis had died 10 years earlier.
Today, Dengel and Son Mortuary is owned and operated by third generation, Craig Dengel. Craig took over the reins when his father, Walter, stepped
down in 1998 to enjoy semi-retirement. A crematorium was added to the Ottawa location in 2005. In March of 2017, Craig purchased the
Penwell-Gabel Funeral Homes in Osawatomie, Paola, and Louisburg.
All employees of Penwell-Gabel remained on staff with the change of ownership to Dengel & Son Mortuary. The Osawatomie location came to
be in 2011 with Debby Stout as the funeral director in charge under the Penwell-Gabel ownership. Debby Stout remains the funeral director at the Osawatomie location under the Dengel ownership. Debby has been in the funeral profession for 25 years. Debby is also a licensed pre-need insurance agent. In addition to seeing Craig, Walt, and Debby working at the funeral home, you will oftentimes see Donna Powell and Cindy Lewis who are employed as support staff at the Osawatomie location.
When asked about the longevity and success of the family business, Craig's reply was, "Our family funeral business, Dengel and Son Mortuary, has
grown and thrived because it has been nurtured by the same family for three generations, a family who believes the families we serve deserve the very
best in funeral service at a fair cost. The Dengel family, and the entire staff, understands it takes dedication and hard work to uphold our reputation for
excellence. Luck has nothing to do with our success, good old fashion hard work, a respect for the people we serve, and pride in our profession, does. If you want the very best in funeral service, you can count on
Dengel & Son Mortuary - Crematory."

Thank you to those who have taken the time to do the Broadband Survey! We encourage each business to take the survey soon as the participation rate in the survey is crucial to attracting a fiber or high-speed provider.
The City of Osawatomie and Project 17 are teaming up to improve broadband, or high-speed, Internet access to the area, and we need your help in gaining a better understanding of your high-speed Internet needs.
We're looking for feedback from local businesses, schools, healthcare, safety and private residential users in the Osawatomie area.
The installation of a high-speed Internet network in Osawatomie will provide opportunities for growth and economic development for the city and its residents, and by completing this survey, you can help us in: - Determining which areas lack Internet access - Assisting us in identifying and prioritizing infrastructure investments - Gathering data for project-related funding requests and grant proposals - Developing programs to enhance broadband adoption
Your input is appreciated, and will be used solely for determining high-speed Internet needs.
During this survey, we will ask you to go to a third-party website to obtain your Internet speed. For this reason, we ask that you take the survey from a device at the location you are reporting. For example, if you are answering questions about your residential Internet needs, please complete the survey from a computer, tablet or other device connected to your household network. Otherwise, the results we receive will not be as precise.
