We initially thought this month's newsletter would focus solely on "Invisible Influences on Healing." Along the way, life intervened, and the topic has expanded to include changes (another new associate), new offerings (special rate Christmas presents to readers) and news at Pacific Naturopathic.
Change:
Brad Beldner, a talented body/mind practitioner, is now an associate at Pacific Naturopathic. For those who miss having a pain and trauma specialist in our office, here is our response. Dr. Connie introduces Brad B. following her monthly musings article, below. What I noticed about Brad B. is that throughout his many years of practice, he has consciously and consistently studied and expanded the depth of his skills. The integration of approaches he offers his clients is rare. I also noticed his insightfulness and humility -- two qualities that are essential to a true healer. More exciting news...
First offering:
You can have an opportunity to meet Brad B. and discuss your needs via telephone. For a short time, he is offering free, 15-minute telephone consults. Please phone the office (650-917-1121) to schedule a time for your chat.
Second offering:
Drs. Connie and Marcel are so excited about our new naturopathic associate, Dr. Benjamin, that we really
want our patients and friends to get to know him and experience him first hand. So for the unbelievable rate of just $11 (see Dr. Benjamin's explanation and details, below), Dr. Benjamin is offering a 60-minute health consultations, as his schedule permits. I feel a bit like an announcer in a TV infomercial, but this offer is just beyond extraordinary. You get to meet a fine person, a brilliant practitioner, and talk about your health challenges for less than the price of a Silicon Valley lunch. Phone the office right away (650-917-1121) if you would like to participate as spaces are limited and the offer will expire at the end of December. Consider this a Christmas present to yourself. (The offer does not include discounts on pharmacy or lab tests.)
Third offering: Well, we (Drs. Connie and Marcel) can't be left out of the Christmas spirit! If other
associates are offering a discount, so can we! Since this newsletter focuses on invisible influences on health, during the month of December, Dr. Connie will offer 30-minute flower essence consultations for just $50 (normally $125), plus the cost of the essence. You can read about flower essences HERE.
Fourth offering: For those of you who have been wanting to experience the healing and rejuvenating wonder of intravenous therapy, Dr. Marcel is offering a new patient 30-minute intake evaluation for $50 (normally $125), followed by a Myers Cocktail for $125 (normally $145). Old patients will receive the discount on the Myers cocktail by mentioning that you read this article. Read about the Myers Cocktail and other IV therapies

The Invisible in Medicine
As I thought about the topic for this month's newsletter, I realized that, with the exception of gross physical trauma, pretty much everything that impacts the health of human beings is invisible. As we become more technologically sophisticated and able to measure and observe energy itself, we are more and more cognizant both of the invisible influences which negatively impact our health, and of those which promote health and well being.
Although medicine is informed by science, medicine often smacks of dogmatism, with new understandings deemed heretical by the powers that be. When, not all that long ago, the Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis dared suggest that post partum mortality would decrease if doctors and midwives disinfected their hands between births, he found himself committed to an asylum, where he was beaten by guards and subsequently died. Years later, Louis Pasteur confirmed the germ theory of disease. The previously invisible germs had become visible.
We've been identifying potentially pathogenic micro organisms ever since. Treating illness on the basis of disease-causing bugs has enabled mankind to triumph over many of the scourges of the 19th and 20th centuries. These days, however, it's far more than infectious disease that disrupts human health. Patients present with complex constellations of symptoms, patterns of chronic disease, autoimmune disease, and other conditions difficult to diagnose and treat.
We now have some understanding, albeit rudimental, of the
the impact of energy (invisible vibrations!) on human form and physiology, and on the potential of energy medicine. The world of conventional medicine has long accepted x rays, CT scans and MRIs, laser and radiation therapies. Yet pioneers of less conventional energy based diagnostics and therapies have been accused of medical malpractice, fraud, and worse. Use of devices that purport to measure and balance the electromagnetic signatures of the organs, glands, and energy centers of the human body have landed more than a few practitioners in jail since the early 20th century and on into the 21st.
The diagnostic and treatment devices and medicines in question are based on the scientific understanding of invisible realities. The truth is that everything in creation has an energetic blueprint and a characteristic rate of vibration. That includes the earth, every cell of our bodies, every microorganism. Physical matter coalesces around this energetic patterning.
Furthermore, our cells communicate through electromagnetic vibration. The electromagnetic frequencies of cell phones and computer connections and microwave ovens and electrical towers do affect us! The medicine of the future will undoubtedly more accurately identify, diagnose and treat the disruptions that ensue from these invisible influences. For now, we have the model T's of energy medicine. (We also have much resistance, as great disruption would ensue were we to acknowledge and address the effect our technologies have on our bodies.)
But we do work with energy medicines. Acupuncture works with the invisible energy flows of the body. Hand healing, like Touch for Health, and psychic healing work in the realm of energy. Homeopathy, flower essences, and light, color and sound therapies work on the principle of energetic resonance. Beyond all of that, is the invisible causal realm... the realm of thought itself. Dr. Connie's Experience With Brad Beldner:
New Associate at Pacific Naturopathic
|
We're delighted to welcome Brad Beldner as an associate Pacific Naturopathic!
Brad has extensive training and experience in a wealth of body/mind modalities, including massage, Feldenkrais, Hakomi, and Somatic Experiencing.
Brad's approach is mindfulness based and individualized to each client. In hands on work, Brad uses gentle touch to help the body align structural and energetic pathways.
Clients come to Brad for many reasons, including histories of trauma, PTSD, chronic pain, anxiety and depression. His work is also particularly useful in integrating body function and alignment after surgeries such as knee and hip replacement or shoulder surgery. Clients remain fully clothed during sessions, but are advised to wear looser fitting clothes to enable freedom of movement.
At the end of a session, the client, through direct in the moment experience, may have gained insight into holding patterns stored in their body. Clients report experiencing a release of trauma stored in the body, gaining insight, and feeling more awake and alive.
My experience of Brad's treatment....
Prior to bringing Brad into the clinic, I (Connie) had an office visit with Brad.
I was most impressed with his easy manner, ability to listen, and noninvasive work.
I had brought a particular issue to Brad regarding a certain kind of tension held in my body. Brad asked me a few questions, listened, then asked if I minded if he applied gentle pressure, in this case, to my forearm (not where the tension was.) I felt my entire body simply release. Later, we did some table work, and I felt in his hands and treatment the effect of years of experience doing many kinds of bodywork. I left feeling more grounded, more peaceful, and quite relaxed.

An introduction to the Feldenkrais Method
Brad Beldner
|
Make the impossible possible,
the possible easy,
the easy elegant...
- Moshe Feldenkrais
Ten years prior to becoming a Feldnerkrais practitioner, I was a bodywork therapist by day (and at night a professional jazz musician) focusing on helping people suffering from complex chronic pain and acute injuries. At that time I was primarily using craniosacral, myofascial and neuromuscular techniques, shiatsu, energy work and massage to help my clients. I still incorporate many of those early healing methods in my current practice.
I got my first introduction to Feldenkrais work in 1997 when I was working as a therapist in a sports medicine clinic in Los Altos California. One of the therapists at the clinic was a Feldenkrais practitioner. He would sometimes lead us through a series of Feldenkrais group movement classes that he called Awareness Through Movement (ATM).
I was always surprised and impressed with how energized and comfortable I felt after each class and was
 |
|
 |
Brad teaching Awareness Through Movement |
inspired to try some one on one Feldenkrais bodywork sessions with him which was even more profound. I found that some of the chronic aches and pains that I had been living with were either greatly reduced or completely gone after each session.
At that time I was looking into chiropractic, occupational therapy and physical therapy colleges in the Bay Area so I could expand my education and elevate my work as a therapist. After my experience in the Feldenkrais movement classes and the transformative experience I had in the one on one work I decided to sign up for a four year Feldenkrais program in Santa Cruz, California.
The training was life changing for me. As I progressed through the training my body and mind transformed on many levels. Besides feeling great internally, my sense of coordination and cognition were enhanced. My body became much more coordinated and freer to move, dance and play. My thinking became sharper and I found I had a growing emotional band width and deeper internal calmness.
How the Feldenkrais Method transforms the body.
|
 |
Brad teaching Awareness Through Movement |
 |
Feldenkrais is an approach to human fitness, functioning and action, based in the understanding that movement is the language of the brain.
Feldenkrais movement was developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984). Dr. Feldenkrias based his work on principles of physics, biomechanics, body-based psychology and his understanding of learning and human development.
Our brains change in relationship to our experiences.
The Feldenkrais method takes advantage of the brain's ability to change (Brain Plasticity) in a positive direction by using movement as the primary mechanism of communicating with the brain and getting it to start forming new connections. Awareness created through movement can either be relaxed passive movements as a Feldenkrais practitioner moves the patient's body, or active movements a person performs during a Feldenkrais Movement class.
Movement provides information the brain needs to grow and organize itself for better coordination and dexterity, for increased strength and range of motion, for better posture and for resolution of chronic pain.
Pain is often the result of faulty and limiting movement habits, and the resulting physical instability.
 |
|
 |
Moshe Feldenkra |
Feldenkrais movement reorganizes connections between the brain and body. When your body is organized, comfortable and free from internal dilemma, your thinking, mood and psychological state greatly improve.
In one-on-one sessions, using gentle bodywork techniques, the body and brain form new patterns of connection that eliminate body aches and pains and increase your strength, flexibility, and creativity. You rediscover the joy of living in your body.
In 2001, I supplemented my therapeutic skills by training and later teaching Somatic Experiencing (trauma renegotiation), Hakomi (Body Based psychology) and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. I use these techniques in conjunction with the Felderkrais in addressing my clients needs. I will write more about the Hakomi Method and Somatic Experiencing in future articles.

Energy Medicine 101
Benjamin Alter, ND
|
When it comes to energy and energy medicine, I'd say we are all beginners! There is certainly much more we don't know, than we do know. What makes it such a challenge is that
by nature, energy is invisible. Sure light, sound, and heat are all forms of energy that we can more directly sense with eyes, ears, or touch. The vast majority of energy moving inside and outside of the body, however, is far beyond that which we experience with our given human sensation.
Where does energy come from?
Join me in a little visualization...
Close your eyelids and focus your awareness on one part of your body. It doesn't matter where. Allow your basic biologic understanding to focus in on any one cell within the body. There are trillions, but you just choose one. Go ahead and enter that cell, through say a transporter embedded in the plasma membrane, and find yourself in the new universe that is this cell. Thousands of organelles moving about, signals being sent and received, everything so chaotic and noisy, yet perfectly orchestrated. Make your way to a mitochondria. There are thousands in this cell, but just find one. It has it's own unique membrane, so go ahead and find a transporter to slide through. Notice the beaming light and sound in here. All of these things shooting around are actually electrons, released to create energy that powers absolutely everything. Take another moment to observer the beauty of the light and sound involved in this energy factory. Now you can make your way out of the mitochondria, back into the cell. Then out of that cell and into the bloodstream. You can flow through for a bit and enjoy the ride before you come back to reality, to experience yourself once again in your whole body.
(I know that you couldn't have your eyes closed AND read the guided visualization above at the same time, but hopefully you still had the experience. If not, give it another try!)
In the most basic, fundamental, molecular, biochemical, physiologic understanding, this is energy. The chemical reaction of adding a phosphate to adenosine-diphosphate (ADP) to form adenosine-triphosphate (ATP) is energy. And it is this little molecule, ATP, that is responsible for powering every single process of the body.
Seeing the invisible
The nature of ATP providing the energy to fuel our functioning is our current understanding, and has been for nearly 80 years. But, is this all there is to us? I personally like to believe I am more than a blob of mitochondrial driven cells.
What about the thoughts flowing through your awareness? What about emotions that come through you? How about memories of past events? These are all examples of energy, too!
Have you ever walked into a room where there was just an argument? Two people may be able to turn their frowns upside down, but could you still feel the "energy" of the argument?
Have you ever had your heart broken? How was your physical health after that?
Better yet, have you ever fallen in Love? Did you go months without any ailment during your "honeymoon" phase?
We are undoubtedly affected by these invisible energetic influences.
Energetic Support
The energetic body can be reinforced in a number of ways. Most simply is the example above;
Love. Be in Love! Don't end your relationship to experience a new honeymoon. Bring the pure joy of your honeymoon self to this moment!
This is certainly much easier said than done. However, setting a strong and clear intention to bring more Love (or other positive emotion/experience) into your life can be a powerful place to start. Furthermore, your new awareness of the positive influence that your emotional state has on your health gives you great leverage.
Homeopathy as Energetic Medicine
If you aren't familiar with homeopathy, I'll give my 2-second description...
Homeopathy is an effective scientific system of healing that uses dilute substances to treat a whole person taking into account the complete set of symptoms that he or she experiences in the mind, body, and emotions, based upon the "law of similars," ie "like cures like."
While there is a physical substance (usually liquid or pellet) that is used in homeopathic administration, the substance is really the way through which the energetic essence is transmitted to the patient. This is our current understanding, and it is also where most get lost, confused, skeptical, or lose faith. But that is okay, because faith is not needed when it comes to homeopathy! Just ask the crying infant or sick animal, both of which respond miraculously to homeopathic treatment.
After completing a homeopathic intake to acquire a complete set of symptoms, the homeopath is able to organize this information to arrive at the "energetic essence" of an individual. This information is then matched with the best well-studied remedy, the similimum, which is delivered to the patient. This remedy has an invisible influence, providing a subtle stress in a way that stimulates the body's self-healing abilities.
In summary
Be mindful of the energy you are exposed to, whether visible or invisible.
Set the intention to adopt a peaceful and equanimous mindset. It is a practice, though this sharpened tool will carve your healing path with grace. Homeopathy is an additional way to powerfully bolster your physical and energetic self to support any healing process, or to simply optimize a state of wellness.

The (Invisible) Healing Intention
|
When we first thought of the title of this month's newsletter, "Invisible Influences on Health, I had the idea that I would write about the invisible and largely unknown toxic effects of cell phones on human beings. As I started writing, another aspect of the invisible entered my consciousness.
I had the privilege of studying with the late John Bastyr, ND, a legendary naturopathic physician and the namesake of Bastyr University in Seattle, arguably the leading naturopathic medical school in the country. A well-known story about Dr. Bastyr is that when a patient came to see him for a medical condition, Dr. Bastyr put his hand on the patient's shoulder in greeting and asked how he could help. The patient suddenly exclaimed, "I don't know why I am here, doc. As soon as I walked through the door, I started to feel better." Hmm. What's going on here? Well, a couple of things...
The first is the intention of the doctor.
Intention is the beginning of the creative experience - the first step in re-organizing the random energetics that give rise to the distortion on the physical plane. Without intention, the path to healing is disorganized and incoherent. Dr. Bastyr, with his experience-developed powers of observation, attuned to the energetic state of the patient and consciously altered the distorted vibrational pattern with his healing intention.
Dr. Bastyr's model of energetic intervention is what naturopathic doctors aspire to.
At Pacific Naturopathic, the healing interchange starts the minute one of the doctors greets the patient in the waiting room. We don't even think about it anymore. We usually know even before we ask "How are you," what the patient's reply will be, so we begin to attune and set our own intention for the visit. The onus is on us, as holistic doctors, to be clear and conscious channels of positive energy.
The second element of the healing equation is the intention of the patient.
The patient must be open, attuned and ready for a positive change in health status to occur. Energetic healing is like a radio: you need a transmitter and you need a receiver.
How does a patient set their intention for a healing experience? Here is one way:
First thing in the morning as soon as you are awake and ready, sit quietly and inhale slowly and deeply for five seconds. Hold the breath for three seconds. Exhale slowly for five seconds. Do this exercise three times,
pausing a moment after each exhalation.
Then, ask yourself the question, "What would make this day exceptional?" Or, "What is the main thing I want to achieve during my visit with my doctor?" Or, "How can I best serve my inner purpose today?" Use one of these or whatever question comes to you naturally. Then listen. Don't try to think, just sit quietly and listen for the simplest answer, usually the first thing that comes into consciousness. Don't dismiss something that may sound too simple. Don't judge the response you get. Resist the mental urge to complicate the answer you receive. Learn to trust the process.
Maintain a connection with your intention throughout the day. Get yourself back on course if you drift by repeating the breathing exercise described above. Feeling relaxed and receptive is the goal.
This simple practice focuses our day, brings meaning and coherence to our experiences and allows positive, healthy energy to flow through us.

On Healing and the Realm of Thought
|
Although most of us are accustomed to thinking of ourselves as our physical bodies, the truth is that the being that we think of as ourselves is a multidimensional energy field. We are beings of infinite energy, encased in matter. We each have a causal body, which is a body of pure consciousness, thought, mind. We have astral bodies, bodies of light and energy, which connect our causal bodies with our physical bodies. The physical body is a result of this interaction of thought and energy.
Another way to say it (as I mentioned in my Musings article above) is that physical form coalesces around energetic patterning. The energetic pattern carries information which guides the cellular growth of physical structure. A disturbance or distortion in the energetic patterning causes physical disease, and balancing that disturbance or distortion can heal physical disease. You may be able to temporarily heal the physical body with physical medicine, but if the energetic patterning is off, the body will return to a reflection of the imbalanced energy pattern.
Ultimately, then, to treat the cause, we must work in the realm of consciousness. Bruce Lipton has eloquently expressed the truth that it is not only nutrients, but our conscious thoughts, our emotions, and our unconscious beliefs that regulate our genetic expression and change our biology. As the Buddha has said "All that we are is the result of what we have thought".

Masaru Emoto's water crystals
|
 |
Thoughts are vibrations of power and energy. Words carry the vibrations of thought. The Japanese scientist Masaru Emoto has done us the tremendous service of photographing the effects of thoughts, words, sounds and more in the crystallization of water.
Beautiful thoughts, words and harmonious music form gorgeous and complex water crystals, whereas violent words cause muddied and disintegrated structures. This is true whether the words are simply thought, spoken, or written. Given the percentages of water in every organ and system of our bodies, you can imagine the impact of every thought you think, every word you speak, to heal or harm yourself.
In healing, then, you can transform your personal reality by focusing your consciousness with thoughts, evocative words and affirmations. When you repeat an affirmation, you plant it as a vibratory seed in your consciousness. Your consciousness begins to resonate with the frequency of the seed thought. As you repeat the affirmation, the frequency is strengthened, and you are changed as a result. Affirmations are based on the science of vibration. Add harmonious sound to a thought, music to words, and you can amplify positive change within your consciousness. Your physical body will reflect the change in consciousness.
Not only chanting and affirmation, but also (and even more so!) attunement to the consciousness of a Master, alignment with Spirit, and deep meditation all change us from the top down to the physical level. Techniques like EFT or tapping (see Jane's article) and somatic experiencing (one of Brad Beldner's techniques) are accessible ways to reprogram the subconscious programming that keeps you locked into emotional and thought patterns that no longer work for you. Exciting work for lasting change!

Who Knows Everything About You?
(Hint
: It's Not Yourself)
|
Imagine having access to everything you ever said, heard, saw, or experienced...that would certainly fill volumes and inform you of things that you had long since forgotten or even noticed. Well, to a certain extent, it's possible.
Everything you have ever experienced, thought and felt is stored in your subconscious mind and you can have access to it.
Just imagine how you could use this information to inform your current life. There is no way your conscious mind and memory can match that.
Keep in mind that your subconscious is operating outside your conscious awareness. And it is following the beliefs and habits that have existed there since before you were seven.
This is why it's critical to question the beliefs that were planted in your young mind and how they are controlling you today. How often have you had the experience of setting goals for yourself, or deciding to change old ways of being, just to find yourself slipping back? It feels as if there is an inner battle between the part of you that wants to change, and a part that seems to be keep you paralyzed.
So how do we engage the subconscious mind for change?
If you are struggling with wanting to change, it may be time to direct your attention towards the subconscious, as opposed to more conscious resolutions and affirmations.
The most effective way to deep change is through hypnotic suggestion. In this process the mind/ body is relaxed and focused. The desired changes bypass the conscious mind and register at the subconscious level to alter the existing programming. The conscious mind is aware of all that is being said, but because the subconscious mind is engaged through the process of hypnosis, the message goes in at the deeper level.
As we go through our daily lives we are not really conscious of the enormous power of the subconscious. The subconscious can solve problems much better than the conscious mind. Its mastery of complexity and complex situations is simply phenomenal.
Knowing how to use your subconscious mind is like having something way more powerful than a super computer inside your head. But it also has the power to keep us from achieving our deepest desires because we are hooked into the old programming of habits and beliefs.
The choice is yours...change is a part of life, so why not have more say in the direction it takes you? Hypnosis can help you get unstuck and open your life to so many more possibilities.
Please feel free to call me about any questions you might have about hypnosis. I offer free consultations.

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic
- physiologic change vs. structural change -
|
In a certain sense, breast thermography makes that which is invisible visible.
While mammograms can only identify visible structural change in the breasts, breast thermography can assess the physiologic change which must always predate structural, anatomic change. This physiologic change is understood primarily through the comparison of temperature values in many locations on each breast. When metabolic processes are initiated or ramped up, there is a change in temperature. This change may reflect injury, inflammation, or more concerning breast changes. Recognizing the physiologic change, we can potentially address problems before they are anatomically locked in.

What We Offer
at the
Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care
|
Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that
our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.
The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer
(including
intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.
Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience. And our bodywork approaches helpreduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.
The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure,
although we are definitely open to miracles,
but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity
and understanding, for however long that may be.

Other I.V. Therapies Offered at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center
--I.V. therapy is not just for cancer patients--
|
Many people have already heard about intravenous vitamin C as a complementary cancer therapy to help stimulate the immune system as well as being directly cytotoxic to cancer cells. This is the most common therapy we use at the Hernandez Center for our cancer patients.
But intravenous therapy is not just for cancer patients. More than half of our IV patients come for various "cocktails" to help them ward off infections and optimize their health. We offer a number of individualized versions of the famous "Myers Cocktail." Read about the Myers Cocktail HERE
Other cocktails we offer promote brain health, assist the liver in its detoxification efforts, relieve the symptoms of chronic fatigue, help reduce stress, bring rapid relief from sinusitis, colds and flus, address immune system disorders, slow the progression of macular degeneration, reduce chronic pain and fibromyalgia and many other conditions.
