What students want to know...
Members of the Regional Operations Board answer questions

Question: Should /can IE's and ISE's have majors in other fields?
Answer: by Kevin Taaffe, RVP of Mid-Atlantic Region, Associate Professor, Clemson University in South Carolina

I would say absolutely. As much as we like to believe that IE/ISE are the most flexible degrees out there, and we are well-trained to step into a variety of roles as a professional, we simply are NOT experts at everything. Supplementing your IE or ISE degree with a business minor, a math minor, or even a psychology minor, is not a bad idea. The more we train ourselves to know that there is more to the world than what you see as an IE or ISE, the better off you will be...and the more perspective you will have when addressing work-related issues. However, we all know that extra time in school can be very expensive. The alternative to getting a minor or a double-major is to find quality courses and certificate programs out there that you could do at a later time, once you have begun your career. Just even teaching yourself technical material or finding free resources online can be a good start to becoming a more well-rounded individual. (If you throw grad school in the mix, having one degree that is not IE or ISE can be an attractive balance, depending on your chosen profession).
