A few athletic historical facts:

An important baseball rule change was made on this day. Prior to this rule change, any hit ball that bounced in the outfield and went over the fence was considered a homerun. But on December 12, 1930, the ground rule double was enacted awarding only two bases to the batter.

A bit of history about Golf... On this day in 1899, an African-American, Harvard professor and dentist named Dr. George Grant patented an important invention for the game he loved so much. His invention? The wooden golf tee. Prior to his invention, the golfer (or his caddie) had to build a sand or dirt mound for the golfer to tee-off from. The wooden tee elevated the ball for an improved shot and is arguably the most under-appreciated invention for the game of golf.

What being the first in my family to go to college taught me about opportunity
By Michael Crow, President of Arizona State University

"College created this incredible environment for me to learn in the widest possible way. It allowed me to give concrete shape to my high-school-age notion that a place of learning can fuel the designer of the future; enable multiple ways of thinking, multiple pathways and subjects; and then apply that learning to drive change and make something new."

Charger of the Week

Alyssa Bradley competes for the Arete Prep archery team. Alyssa has worked hard during this archery season to achieve consistent scoring by spending several hours a week improving her aim and form. Alyssa listens to feedback and immediately implements it to continuously improve her competition scores. She currently holds the teams highest score for tournaments this season: 257 out of 300. Congratulations to Alyssa Bradley for being our Charger of the Week!
