March 2018 President Letter
Hello Guild members and happy spring!
Spring is almost here and I am looking forward to longer days, earlier sunrises and later sunsets. Daylight Savings Time is March 11 and the official spring date is March 20. I am ready, aren't you? It seems that we all need more hours in the day to do what we enjoy.
We had a wonderful Member's Exhibition in February. I would like to congratulate all the participants, winners, the many volunteers that made it successful and the show's judge, Mark Horton. Our next exhibit will be in the fall so it is not too early to start thinking about that.
We have two outreach programs that we sponsor annually in the Spring. The Extraordinary Arts Exhibition and the High School Senior Art Exhibit. Both of these programs are for students in the tri-county area and have been made possible by our Guild Outreach Program and the generous support of our members and sponsors. I encourage you to visit these exhibits and join the many volunteers who make them possible.
If you haven't been to the gallery to see the fresh look, you must go. It was painted and paid for by the gallery artists and I am so proud of them. Extra shout out to Gallery Director Heart Bernados and her husband Taber, a familiar face at the door during ArtWalks. Without you, the Charleston Artist Guild could not be the success we are today. I encourage members to participate in our events and I thank you all for being a part of my family. I hope to see many of you at our March members meeting and the 2 upcoming Guild sponsored events. And don't forget, if you would like to be an exhibiting member of the Charleston Artist Guild you need to see the article below about our jurying-in process coming up this month.
Keep a lookout for the bluebird this spring!

Heart Bernados, Gallery Director
CAG's gallery has awesome artists and lovers of the arts. What a team and family! A special THANK YOU to all the gallery members donating funds to paint the walls and brighten up the gallery. Donations paid for the paint and volunteers moved the artwork while others painted the walls virtually and literally over night. It was just amazing to see the response. Stop by to see the results. The gallery is open 7 days a week, 11am-6pm.
The following group of gallery artists and spouses were our dream team.
Tracy Gansrow - Betsy McDonald - Dorrell Antley - Heart and Taber Bernados - Carolyn Aberbach - Karen and John Gaag - Dorothy Rogers - Flo Ulrich - Lori Jill - Lynn Salkeld - Jan and Tom Kelley - Sandy Asplundh -
Deb Palmer - John Albrecht - Anne Weld - Kay Moffitt - Elliot West
March Featured Artist
The Charleston Artist Guild Gallery is pleased to present Coastal Splendor, featuring the beautiful photography of local artist,
Susan Ansley Montanaro
.
Susan is the featured artist at the Charleston Art Gallery during the month of March. Her exhibit will be on display from March 1 through March 31, 2018
Susan grew up in a very close-knit family in Decatur, Georgia. There were several artists in her family including her mother who dabbled in oil painting and two aunts and an uncle who were professional photographers and therefore her desire to follow their lead seemed only natural. She has always been drawn to the coast, so she and her husband moved to the Charleston area 10 years ago. She says, "I've been capturing the beauty of the sunrises and sunsets over the water on camera ever since we got here. I guess it's just in my blood!"

Along the River by Betty Anglin Smith
|
"My deep respect for and my spiritual connection to the natural landscape are central to my painting. Having lived on the coastal marshlands and a tidal sound for the last ten years, I have focused my work on capturing the rawness and beauty of these surroundings.
Meandering waterways, maritime forests, open vistas of marshlands, and dramatic sky patterns are my frequent subjects. Through expressionistic brushwork and exaggeration of color, I hope to express the power, peace, and emotion from experiencing these elements of nature."
Betty will begin her presentation discussing her expressionistic brushwork and color and has generously offered to critique some of our work! If you would like to have your art critiqued, please let us know! It is a fantastic opportunity.

The 64th Annual Member Exhibition Reception - the results are in
February 10th brought together artists and their friends and family for the
Member Exhibition Reception at the Charleston Visitor Center. Thank you goes to Mark Horton who was the judge this year. Mark was very thorough evaluating the submissions and offering comments. Many works deserved recognition above and beyond the traditional categories.
Thanks go to the team of volunteers, under the direction of Steve Jacobs, who took care of the clerical work, signed in the artwork and helped with hanging the show. And Jan Kelly and the hospitality committee always make the CAG art events even more memorable.

Upcoming Guild celebrations rely on member participation
Jan Kelley, Hospitality Director
The Hospitality committee, under the direction of Jan Kelley, works hard to make the Charleston Artist Guild's many receptions memorable for all. Every General Meeting has a reception in addition to the exhibitions listed in the
Easel, so there are plenty of opportunities to lend a hand.
Take your pick, there are plenty of ways to help.
Bring a dish to share, c
ome early and help set-up, tend bar, help serve, or
help b
reakdown and clean up.
The High School Senior Art Exhibit Reception on April 21 and the Extraordinary Art Show Reception in March will also need your participation to hang the show and provide a lovely experience for these hardworking students, so please join in.

Extraordinary Arts Program
Extraordinary Arts Program Exhibit showcases the artwork of children with disabilities from the schools in the three counties encompassing Charleston. This year's show is in March, and by several measures is the best yet. Children with disabilities often are overlooked as budding artists, indeed in some cases don't even have room for art education in their schedules. So this program is a combined effort of art teachers and special education teachers in our local schools, and we thank them for their dedication. Steve Jacobs and Muriel Lanciault have led the efforts this year, with the help of the Charleston Public Library, Main Branch on Calhoun Street.
Every student participating receives a goody bag of art supplies and their teachers receive gift cards for classroom art supplies. All of the expenses are supported by grants. The reception will be Saturday, March 24, 2-3pm at the Charleston Public Library, Main Branch 68 Calhoun Street. The public is welcome to attend.

CAG members are encouraged to volunteer to help coordinate the program, hang the work, judge, take do wn the show or collect the prizes and goody bag items. 8-10 volunteers would be much appreciated. Contact Steve at the Guild office (843) 722-2454 or charlestonartist@bellsouth.net
