Pat Hickey Named New Executive Director of Charter School Association of Nevad
a
Carson City, January 4th, 2017 - Colin Seale, President of the Charter School Association of Nevada (CSAN) announced today the hiring of former Assembly Minority Leader and State Board of Education member, Pat Hickey as the new Executive Director of CSAN.
"Assemblyman Hickey was an original Assembly sponsor of Charter School legislation in Nevada in 1997. For decades, Pat has been a consistent voice for public school reforms and enhanced funding for Nevada classrooms. Pat's reputation as a bipartisan bridge builder will help CSAN schools work with legislative leaders and community partners to expand charter school opportunities to more of Nevada's underserved students by expanding broader public school choices for families and their students," said Seale, who has worked to expand minority participation in Nevada's charter schools.
Nevada's 40 charter schools with over 30,000 students comprise, in effect, Nevada's third largest school district. Charter schools are public schools which are free to attend and receive funding similar to regular district schools. Charters offer alternative programs and curriculums to better prepare students for career and college-ready opportunities the "New Nevada" economy is producing.
Charter schools in Nevada currently don't receive the same level of funding support that regular school districts do. Facilities funding and transportation costs aren't currently included in state-allocated funding formulas for charter schools. The SAGE [Spending and Government Efficiency] Commission recently approved a Guinn Center for Policy Priorities recommendation for a "proportionate share of bond proceeds for charter schools" be considered in the upcoming Legislative Session--with an emphasis on finding ways to support the creation of more charter school options in Nevada's traditional underperforming school zones.
Dr. Eve Breier, CSAN Board member and Principal at Imagine Schools at Mountain View in Las Vegas, said about the hiring of Pat Hickey as a full-time Executive Director; "As the charter school movement in Nevada continues to grow we are working hard to create a footprint in academic excellence. In doing so, we believe that former Assemblyman Pat Hickey has the knowledge and the experience to guide CSAN as we strive for education equality for all Nevada students.”
Speaking about goals for the upcoming Legislative Session, new CSAN Executive Director Hickey said, "Charter schools are a public school option in Nevada's tool chest for building a more relevant 21st century school system." Hickey added, "I look forward to working with Legislative leadership and Gov. Sandoval to come up with creative ways in which charter schools can better utilize private and public dollars to become a part of Nevada's educational solutions."
Besides previously serving in leadership roles in the Nevada Legislature, Hickey was appointed by Gov. Sandoval to serve on the State Board of Education. He currently teaches in the Political Science Dept. at UNR and serves on the Board of Directors of the Guinn Center for Policy Priorities.
