 Steps To A Healthy Relationship
by
Shardavia Holmes, Senior, Saginaw High School

1) SPEAK UP. If you are in a relationship you should be able to tell your partner things that are going on. If something is bothering you, it's best to talk about it instead of holding it in. I know this from a personal experience. I held most of my anger in. I did not want to tell my partner because I thought I would get over it. Sooner than later he broke my heart. I ended up keeping everything in and started hurting the people around me. It's not good to hold things in. Take the time to talk to your partner, you may find you can work it out.

2) RESPECT EACH OTHER. Your partner's feelings matter. You need to let your partner know that you are making an effort to keep their ideas in mind. Having respect in a relationship keeps it going. Treat your partner the way you want them to be towards you.

3) COMPROMISE. Disagreements are common in a relationship. You are not meant to agree all the time. It is important to find a way to compromise in a relationship. You should try to solve all your problems in a fair but rational way.

4) BE SUPPORTIVE. Your partner wants to know that you care about them. I love support. In my relationship when my partner is supportive I feel that he cares about me. This keeps me motivated. Also, you should let your partner know when you need support. Usually people can tell when you need support; even if they can't tell, tell them. Healthy relationships are about building people up, not putting each other down.

5) SET BOUNDARIES. I love being with my boyfriend, but there are times when he needs his space. There are times when I need my own space as well. Just because you're in a relationship, doesn't mean you have to be with them every second of the day. Healthy relationships also require individual time.

The Saginaw High Teen Advisory Council created this video to talk to teens

Our Community Gives Back

Survivors of domestic violence received a special gift thanks to a new community partnership program between the Saginaw Township Police Department and the Saginaw Township Walmart store, located at 5825 Brockway Road. The partnership looks to better the community by promoting public safety and giving back to those in need. Walmart gift cards totaling $500 were donated to URR in part by the Coca-Cola Corporation, Walmart, and the Saginaw Township Police Department and Police Officers Association.
