May 19, 2017

Hi all,
It's happened. I've turned into a golf fanatic! I've played every weekend since the weather started to cooperate. I bought a new driver (it came with a lesson from my golf pro nephew), and my new goal is to break 50. I know, I'm not a great golfer, but I love the game and I love the challenge of chasing that stupid little ball around.

I'm volunteering at the LPGA event that is coming to Thornberry Creek in Green Bay July 3-9. To volunteer, it costs $75 - but for that you get a hat, a shirt, and a jacket, and if you volunteer for three 1/2 day shifts, you get free golf at Thornberry Creek. I'm really looking forward to seeing a bunch of really good golfers up close. If that sounds like fun to you, check this out. No golf experience required!

Peace

What's YOUR Best Story?
NEA RA - June 25 - July 5 (Boston)

Approximately 8,000 delegates - including 122 from Wisconsin - will represent state and local affiliates, student members, retired members, and other segments of the united education profession at the NEA's Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly this summer in Boston.

Jane Weidner, social studies and Spanish teacher at Cedar Grove Middle School in the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District had this to say:

"I am the NEA. The NEA is an organization of everyday education professionals, who work in the best interest of our students, our communities, and our schools. One of the ways that I can contribute to that cause is by attending the NEA Representative Assembly. It is democracy in action and allows me to have a voice in the direction that my union takes. We are in a time when public education is under attack, and it is crucial that we stand together with other educators from around the nation to protect our public schools. The NEA RA is one opportunity for me to do just that."

Region 3 is Participating in
NEA's Early Enrollment Campaign

Now is a good time to have membership conversations with folks who haven't yet made the commitment to join our union. Early enrollment is available to any employee who has never been a member of WEAC/NEA. For those who fill out an early enrollment form, these are the benefits:
  • Membership for the 2017-18 school year (September 1, 2017, through August 31, 2018) begins as soon as we receive a signed form.
  • Payment of dues does not begin until September 10, 2017.
  • NEA liability insurance begins immediately.
  • Access to QEI Gold Membership, WEAC Saver's Club, and NEA Click and Save.
Please contact the WEAC Region 3 at 800-472-5582 for more details about how to sign up your members using the Early Enrollment plan.

The August 7th Listening Project has a very important focus: a Fall Membership Drive for YOUR local. When a team from YOUR local attends this workshop, they will come away with a PLAN to increase membership. You can't afford to miss this one! Learn more and sign up today!

Stand with AT&T Mobility!

40,000 workers at AT&T just announced that they will walk off the job Friday at 3pm ET/Noon PT if they haven't won a fair union contract by then.

This will be the biggest strike in the United States since 40,000 Verizon workers walked out last year, and may be the biggest strike of retail workers at a national company in U.S. history.

Can you join striking workers at a picket line at a nearby retail store Friday, Saturday or Sunday? Please RSVP.

State Budget Debate: Restore Funding for Public Schools!

The Joint Finance Committe has already started voting on sections of the budget and expects to conclude its deliberations in early June. We expect decisions on PreK-12 education to come at the end of the process. The budget then goes to both houses of the Legislature, and ultimately back to the governor, who has broad partial-veto authority.

Wisconsin has made it clear what we support: More funding for neighborhood public schools. It's time for elected leaders to deliver, with a budget that restores funding for the majority of students. A budget that reigns in exploding private voucher spending. And a budget without last-minute surprises that have never before seen the light of day, much less a public hearing.

WEAC's National Board Jump Start Training is July 24-26 at UW-Eau Claire

Jump Start is an intensive seminar geared for teachers pursuing National Board Certification who intend to submit components in the 2017-18 school year. This professional development opportunity has been designed by NEA members who are Nationally Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs). Over the years these union members have worked with thousands of candidates across the country assisting with component entry.

In the Jump Start seminar you will be provided with important information about the certification process, time to examine component and assessment center requirements, the opportunity to plan how to meet requirements as well as time to collaborate and gather resources needed to pursue your certification.
