Celebrating 20 Years of Building Homes and Building Hope
Thanks to the dedicated support of our donors, sponsors, tradespeople and volunteers, Habitat for Humanity NCR has been making homeownership a reality for hard-working, low-income families in our region since 1993. We're celebrating our 20th anniversary this year with special events, tributes and profiles of the people who make it possible to build safe, decent and affordable homes right here in our community!
The Caceres Family Celebrates their New Bungalow

It was standing room only at the Dedication Ceremony on October 30 for our first build to be completed on Nantes Street. The Caceres family were warmly welcomed to their new home by Cumberland Coun. Stephen Blais, Beth Maiden from Soloway Wright, our Platinum Hammer sponsor, and many of our volunteers, sponsors, tradespeople, suppliers and neighbours.

The family's bright and accessible bungalow was specially designed for their daughter's needs since she restricted to a wheelchair. It includes an accessible bathroom, a ceiling lift and track system to safely transport her and a large window in Amanda's bedroom so she can enjoy the sunshine.

Habitat Heroes: Edible Generosity
Veronique Landry (right) and her staff at the Portobello Manor Retirement Residence were just one of the generous companies, restaurants, stores and individuals who donated food to our Orleans build this year.

We asked for help and you responded! We had such an amazing outpouring of food donations for our Orleans build over the past six months.

"This is the first time we've build three homes at the same time and it was a bit daunting to organize lunches, snacks and coffee for so many hard-working volunteers," says Peggy Winstan, Habitat NCR's Coordinator of Volunteers. "But the response from local restaurants, stores, retirement homes and neighbours was overwhelming. Thank you to everyone for your generosity."

For a complete list of our food donors and all of our sponsors, suppliers, trades and designers for our build of 2123, 2125 and 2127 Nantes St., please click here.

Stay tuned for more information.

Looking Back: The Gift Home 2010

As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we're looking back at our builds over the years. In 2010, Habitat NCR received the largest donation in its history when Marilyn Vavasour, a Calgary lawyer and Ottawa native, donated a two-storey house in the city's west-end community of Qualicum.

Marilyn wanted to do something special with the home, which had been bequeathed to her by Ottawa lawyer Jim Reid. Habitat NCR turned this tremendous gift into a $1 million capital funding and public awareness campaign by renovating the house from top to bottom.

Thanks to a dream team of Ottawa designers, corporate sponsors, tradespeople, 150 companies and our wonderful volunteers, the renovation and sale of "The Gift Home" exceeded all expectations.

Bell Canada Volunteers Give Back

Retired Bell Canada employees Claude Elliott, Tom Keyworth and Phil Sheen recently presented Habitat NCR with a donation of $2,500 from the organization's Employee Giving Program.

We're proud to report that Claude, Phil and Tom, seen here with George Hendry, Interim CEO, at our Nantes Street Build, volunteered a combined total of 1,937 hours with Habitat NCR in 2013!
