Alyssa Leecy, our Trainer of the Quarter! Alyssa is the adult day site provider for the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe in Cass Lake. She trained 14 individuals for her Adult Day program - it was the first training to take place in the tribal community. Alyssa found success by using the support tools found on the REST trainer portal, and by recruiting with flyers, calendar posts and newspaper ads. Alyssa describes the REST training as "essential" for caregivers working with families.
Centro Tyrone Guzman
offers a variety of programs for families focusing on health and education. They will offer their first REST Companion class in Spanish to individuals who will provide respite to family caregivers, beginning this spring.
The Litchfield Area Caregiver Workshop will take place on April 11
, at Meeker Memorial Hospital, Litchfield. The event for caregivers and those who work in caregiver settings will include speakers, workshops and lunch. Register
Neighborhood Network for Seniors
St. Paul, held a Companion class in March. The goal of the Network is to mobilize and coordinate community volunteers and health professionals to help their older neighbors stay in their homes.
Lakes and Pines Community Action Council
has two upcoming Companion classes scheduled this spring. Classes will take place on April 11, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Pine City. Another class will take place on April 12, at Lakes and Pines CAC, Mora. Register for both classes
Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota
will offer two Companion courses, beginning on April 4 and 11
, primarily for the Senior Companion program. Volunteers in the program
offer such services as visiting homebound isolated adults, helping with routine errands or transportation, and providing support to family caregivers
Eighteen REST Companions were trained in March, through funding from the Unicorn Children's Foundation, United Way and Children Services Council of Palm Beach County.
Companion classes were held at
Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, Boca Raton, on March 14, and at United Community Options of South Florida, Hialeah, on March 26.

June 20-21, in Addison. The course prepares experienced REST trainers to conduct the two-day Train-the-Trainer course and to mobilize REST training throughout their communities. See course

Caregiver Lunch & Learn workshops
will take place in seven locations across the country, through Caregiver Action Network. The goal of the workshops, entitled, "Shared Decision Making for Family Caregivers and Patients," includes increasing the ability of family caregivers and care receivers to use research in making important healthcare decisions. During a recent national REST trainer call, REST Trainers from
St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church
, Henderson, presented their respite caregiving model, which includes pairing two REST Companions who provide respite for families. REST trainers from the church have trained 30 Companions, who meet monthly for reflection, support, and development of the program. Future objectives of the program include announcing the respite program in church bulletins, activating a family caregiver support hotline at the church, and developing a family caregiver support group.
The Stanislaus County Aging & Veterans Services, Modesto, held a Companion course on March 7-8.
The newly trained Companions will serve the growing number of caregivers who request respite-care services through the
Senior Relief Buddy Program.

The 11th annual The Art of Aging Gracefully Resource Fair will take place on April 10, at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. The event will include presentations from medical professionals and local experts on healthy living. See more information.

The conference, themed "Aging Together - The Power of Community," will include a "Virtual Dementia Tour," which allows participants to experience the effects of Alzheimer's disease, and what it is like to walk in the shoes of individuals who have the disease.
