Promoting Water Resources Sustainability from New Jersey to China

China's Ministry of Water Resources is committed to strengthening academic cooperation and technical exchanges with the world to jointly promote researches and practices on estuary and coastal water resources issues that are confronted globally. In an effort to build partnerships to strengthen cooperation, exchange experiences, share technology, and working together to promote sustainable water resources, the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources traveled to Rutgers University from November 11 - 13. Dr. Christopher C. Obropta had the opportunity to meet with 18 officials from China's Ministry of Water Resources to demonstrate how New Jersey and specifically the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program works to address water resources issues with sustainable and practical science-based solutions.

Assessing the Effectiveness of Subsurface Gravel Wetlands in Toms River, NJ

The RCE Water Resources Program has partnered with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to explore options for reducing pollution in the Barnegat Bay.

This study looks at how well subsurface gravel wetlands (SGWs) can reduce nitrogen in stormwater. These SGWs have the potential to be a strong tool in improving the health of the Barnegat Bay and the larger New Jersey area.

A SGW mimics a typical wetland that can be found throughout New Jersey's shores and low lying areas. The study included the placement of SGWs in existing detention basins to treat stormwater for contaminants while mitigating stormwater. These SGWs also have the added benefit of providing wildlife habitat.
