  EXECUTIVE UPDATE
The features in this newsletter demonstrate the collaborative efforts that have been building in the South Bend-Elkhart Region. Partnerships between the local, regional and state economic development efforts, as well as through public-private partnerships are creating a solid foundation for current and future economic activity.

Our state and local elected officials, local, regional and state economic development professionals and chambers of commerce are frequently working together to leverage our business climate in a way that supports existing companies and attracts new companies to generate additional economic activity in our region.

This type of public-private collaboration recently led to the construction of two speculative industrial buildings within the region. This month, AM General and Pretzels, Inc. announced that they will occupy these two spec buildings, in South Bend and Plymouth respectively, resulting in exactly the economic activity and investment that they were intended to spur.

Spec buildings have become a creative economic development tool providing businesses with the opportunity to meet their speed to market and risk mitigation needs. The forward thinking partnership between the communities and developers in constructing these buildings provided a ready-to-occupy solution that facilitated our region's ability to attract a business from outside of the area and support the growth of an existing company.

We want to thank the many businesses from across the region for providing the leadership needed to drive the economic development partnerships resulting in this type of creative thinking and ongoing collaboration that will ensure our region's success as we navigate the competitive economic development world.

Sincerely,

Regina Emberton
President & CEO
