March 2016 e-News
As Friends of Hudson River Park's Capital Campaign progresses, so too does the design process for what will become the reimagined Chelsea Waterside Play Area. After receiving input from a wide range of neighbors, constituents and playground users, the award-winning team from Mathews Nielsen is currently working to create a vibrant, community-centric resource based on the varied needs for this particular space and drawing on their previous experience with playgrounds, including the ever-popular Play Area at Pier 25 in Hudson River Park. We look forward to sharing additional design updates throughout the coming months.
We would be remiss in our renovation of Chelsea Waterside Play Area without proper consultation with the experts. Luckily, some have shared their invaluable experiences...

Graham (age 13) and Laine (age 10)

Why do you think playgrounds in New York City are important?
Graham:  Living in the city, there isn't much nature or open spaces-- we need playgrounds to run around and just be kids.
Laine:  Yeah, you can't run around in your apartment without destroying stuff so you have to go outside with places to run around.
Laine:  I like monkey bars and the hanging seats that are connected by chains.  I also like the bars that are shaped and that spin around.  My dad and my friends spin me around in circles.  I like the water part; it is so great for cooling off in the summer.
Graham:  A set up for more water play, less fountains. I love rivers, that too.  Also, I'm not sure how much space you would need for this, but maybe a big hill as a look out spot.  A big slide would be cool too, like a really wide one.  Maybe coming down from the look out hill?
Graham: Mostly everything that involves going outside and parks are open and water is running.  In the winter they turn the water off so it won't be freezing.
Laine: It's fun to go for the whole day and do everything at the Park.

The generous matching gift offer from The Philip & Janice Levin Foundation is still active throughout the month -- all pledges made by March 31, 2016 will be matched up to $150,000. Friends of Hudson River Park would like to extend our sincere thanks to all who have already donated and helped fuel our progress to this point.

We cannot build this playground without your help!
Contributing to the Capital Campaign now during this match opportunity makes a particularly substantial impact. Please join us and lend your support by making a direct donation
to ensure our neighborhood children the continued recreational and developmental benefits of this invaluable outdoor resource.
