On March 6, CNN will debut a new eight part documentary series called
Chicagoland. The unscripted series, executive-produced by Robert Redford, explores the inner workings of Chicago government and how politics and policy meet the lives of Chicagoans. Documentary film crews spent eight months tailing Mayor Emanuel and were able to capture moments like shutting down schools in efforts to close budget gaps and a decrease in the City's murder rate.
This series is sure to be a conversation starter on how to create solutions to Chicago's most persistent problems. Organizations like Chicago Commons are already creating impact in neighborhoods and can be a major contributor to the dialogue. For example, we have seen children from low-income households develop a passion for learning in our pre-school and Head Start programs and grow up to lead successful lives resisting the culture of gangs and guns.
We are looking forward to being a part of the conversation surrounding
Chicagoland. Click here to view the trailer, and I hope you will tune in on March 6.
Sincerely,
Edgar Ramirez
President and CEO

Time for Celebration!
(L to R) Chicago Commons President/CEO Edgar Ramirez and Chicago Commons Board Chair James Hill
Last Wednesday, we celebrated our new President and CEO, Edgar Ramirez, with a gathering of new and old Commons' friends and supporters at Bin 36. Thanks to all that attended! Check out our Facebook page to more pictures.
Commons in the Community
On January 20, 2014, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. our very own Steven Tillman, a 2013-2014 AmeriCorps Member, joined several other volunteers to paint murals at Sullivan High School. Thanks Steven for your work at Commons and in the community!
Commons' Advocates
Our director of child development, Janice Woods (pictured in the back of the photo), attended the National Head Start Association's Winter Leadership Institute in January. She had the opportunity to meet Congressman Bill Foster at a Head Start breakfast, who has been a huge champion on behalf of Head Start programming.
