April 7 & Tuesday, April 8 Chick Corea's four decade career is filled with musical experiences which have filled many a page in 20th century music history books. Born Armando Anthony Corea in Chelsea, Massachusetts on June 12, 1941, Chick was studying piano by age four and enjoyed a childhood home filled with the sounds of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Lester Young and Horace Silver - not to mention the likes of Beethoven and Mozart, who inspired Chick's compositional instincts. Wednesday, April 9 An established jazz pianist and composer, Florian Hoefner has toured extensively throughout Europe, the US, and Canada. His performances are featured on ten CD releases, including a collaboration with renowned guitarist, Kurt Rosenwinkel. He has been heard at major festivals across Europe, such as Jazz Baltica in Salzau, Germany, the Bohemia Jazz Fest in the Czech Republic and the Tremplin Jazz Festival in Avignon, France, where his band Subtone was the recipient of both the jury and audience awards. He shared the stage with the likes of Joe Lovano, Seamus Blake, Rich Perry, John Riley and Tim Ries. With his New York-based Florian Hoefner Group he has released two critically acclaimed albums on OA2 Records and has performed over 60 shows in Europe and North America up to date. Thursday, April 10 thru Sunday, April 13 Pianist Cyrus Chestnut appeals to both aficionados and fans alike. Adept enough to perform with Wynton Marsalis, yet hip enough to make the “Peanuts” album swing. Chestnut worked with a number of top-notch musicians including Jon Hendricks, Betty Carter, Terence Blanchard, and Donald Harrison, before recording his first solo CD at the age of 30. Chestnut enjoys mixing styles and resists being typecast in any one niche, though his gospel sound is apparent on a number of his recordings. Next Week at Blues Alley! Monday, April 14 Claude Diallo is back at Blues Alley after a successful debut with his trio Claude Diallo Situation in 2012. The young Swiss pianist that is based in New York presents his first solo CD: "Nothing to Prove". Diallo mesmerizes audiences around the globe with his unique compositions that blend tradition together with a modern approach to jazz piano with the influences of Keith Jarrett, Michel Camilo or Oscar Peterson. April 15 The Bowie State University Band Program, under the direction of Dr. Adolph E. Wright, is comprised of the Symphony Of Soul Marching and Pep Bands, as well as the Concert and Jazz Bands. Each ensemble functions as part of a primary musical unit that services the Bowie State University community and represents the University in a performance capacity throughout the United States and abroad. The BSU jazz band is a select group of approximately 20 musicians who make up a fully instrumented "big band." Emphasis is placed on the study of diverse jazz styles and literature, ensemble performance, and improvisation. Wednesday, April 16 Known for his touch, versatility and musical approach, jazz drummer Steve Fidyk has earned national and international acclaim as an artist, author and columnist. Fidyk's newest album, Heads Up! (Posi-Tone, 2014) is a quintet date that features his original arrangements and compositions, along with some covers and two compositions by guitarist Shawn Purcell. Joining Fidyk and Purcell in the band are Terell Stafford on trumpet and Regan Brough on bass. Thursday, April 17 & Friday, April 18 JON FADDIS is a complete and consummate musician - conductor, composer, and educator. As a trumpeter, Faddis possesses a virtually unparalleled range and full command of his instrument, making the near impossible seem effortless. Terell Stafford has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. A consummate fixture on the New York jazz scene, Lew Soloff’s career is filled with a rich history of renowned sessions and world-class collaborations. Saturday, April 19 The Triumphant Trumpets JON FADDIS is a complete and consummate musician â conductor, composer, and educator. Terell Stafford has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. After matriculating at Towson State University, Tommy Williams joined the renowned Duke Ellington Orchestra, under the direction of Mercer Ellington, with whom he played the national tour of the Broadway smash Sophisticated Ladies, also touring Japan with the road company.
