Chief Fundraiser Going on Extended Leave?
You Have Options

By Caite Gilmore, Vice President

It's inevitable: your chief fundraiser or major gift officer goes on maternity, paternity, or extended leave, when you need them most.  Your fundraising goals are looming, and you can't help but feel nervous and slightly panicked.  While you scramble to determine how your remaining staff will fill the vacant role in the interim, you worry that you just won't have the leadership to keep fundraising momentum going.  Rest assured, you have options.

For 25 years, Orr Associates, Inc. (OAI) has embedded experienced fundraising professionals within nonprofit organizations to supplement or fill their development department needs.  Ranging from providing staff leadership and adding staff capacity to direct frontline fundraising, our services are custom designed to suit each nonprofit's unique needs and culture - on an interim or long-term basis.

The benefits of turning to OAI for your interim staffing needs?
  • Development leadership ensures a continued focus on revenue generation;
  • Moves management of prospect and donor relationships - cultivation activities, events, and solicitations - progresses uninterrupted;
  • Board stewardship and fundraising continues; and
  • If desired, development of a fundraising plan for when the chief fundraiser returns from leave.
OAI is Not a Temp Agency.  It's a Strategic Solution
OAI works with our partner clients to help build long-term, sustainable, and broad relationships -- with donors, with the board, and with key staff members.  We are an action-oriented, embedded resource, seamlessly working with you, your board, and other staff to achieve your fundraising goals. In this capacity, you can turn to us for strategy, fundraising, development team management, metrics development, and special projects.

OAI fully owns our work and are accountable to you for results.  We partner with each client as if we will be working side-by-side with the team long term.   When you can't afford to leave precious dollars on the table, OAI can step in quickly with "boots on the ground" to keep philanthropic revenues flowing.

How It Works
OAI has 30+ frontline fundraisers ready to assist you.  They are nimble, experienced, and can adjust to most any fundraising environment. This limits startup time and allows for immediate results. Instead of just a single fundraiser filling in the position, OAI will provide you with a custom team that's right for your organization.  Team members could include:
  • A Managing Partner/Managing Director who will lead the assignment along with a Vice President to provide high-level strategic counsel;
  • A Director or Senior Associate Director, who brings 10+ years of direct fundraising experience, who will serve onsite in the interim role (i.e., carries the title of Interim Chief Development Officer, etc.) and as project manager; and
  • An Associate Director or Associate who will provide prospect research, project management, and administrative support to the team.
By structuring our teams in this way, you get the right people at the right levels - from the most experienced strategic thinkers to the best administrative support -- working for you.

A minimum commitment of three months is needed.  Our pricing is based on need, services requested, and the amount of time needed from each team member.

"The OAI team seamlessly integrated with our growing development team - ensuring a smooth transition and continued fundraising momentum while I was out on maternity leave.  Craig Shelley from OAI provided effective leadership as the Interim Chief Development Officer. He and his team worked well with the Staff and the Board on sustaining our fundraising efforts."

-- Elena Pak, Chief Development Officer,
Girl Scouts of the USA
Success Story
OAI provided the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) interim leadership during the Chief Development Officer's maternity leave.  OAI took on direct accountability for the 25-person development team as GSUSA assumed a goal 44 percent larger than their prior best fundraising year and provided support to 112 local Councils raising over $100 million annually.  As a result, through the first quarter of fiscal 2016, the GSUSA team has raised 54 percent more funds than they did during the same period in fiscal 2015.
