Columbia, S.C.
- As South Carolina's leader in the prevention of child abuse, neglect and injuries, Children's Trust is hosting its largest Prevention Conference Oct. 2-3 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.
Approximately 800 attendees are expected for the biennial two-day event, which brings together social workers, home visitors, counselors, program administrators and other child-serving professionals. With a theme of
"Embracing Prevention, Empowering Communities,"
the conference will emphasize the role everyone plays in keeping children safe.
The second day of the Prevention Conference also will feature the
Child Passenger Safety Summit
, which brings in car seat technicians from across the state to discuss the latest information on preventing catastrophic injuries in vehicles. This is an important training for technicians as they can earn the continuing education credits necessary to maintain their certification.
Motor vehicles crashes are the leading cause of death and injury for children over one year of age, which makes the work of technicians so critical and why it’s important to have more of them and more car seat inspection stations in every county of the state.
Select child passenger safety technicians will be recognized in eight categories for their life-saving work in the field at Tuesday's Jones Bowen Awards. Rep. Beth Bernstein of Richland County will be present to hand out the awards and salute the CPS technicians for their commitment and dedication.
