A homage to the award-winning avant-garde jazz composer, Asian American author and political activist, Fred Ho's Last Yearcaptures the unapologetic Fred Ho in an unbelievable year as he fights cancer, leads orchestras, holds lectures, leads protests, publishes books, and even produces his magnum opus: an elaborate, manga-inspired samurai opera on a New York stage.

Las Biciclestas By Gilberto Aceves Navarro

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) and NYC Parks are pleased to present Gilberto Aceves Navarro's LAS BICICLETAS in various New York locations. This ground-breaking exhibit will hold a unique place in Mexican art history.

This summer, LAS BICICLETAS celebrates both art and bicycle riding in one of the most important cultural hubs of the world. One hundred twenty-two "bicicletas" sculptures will be installed in ten public spaces throughout Brooklyn and lower Manhattan during the months of July, August and September. The public will be encouraged to visit the exhibit on bicycle, following a route of approximately then miles of bicycle lanes and paths.

On a recent weekend in New York City, a ball rocketed across an asphalt court. It was then volleyed, set up and a player leapt to slam it over the net. A wall of six airborne players blocked the ball and shot it back across the net.One point for the serving side. One point for the serving side.

It was my first time seeing a game of nine-man. It's like volleyball, but teams have nine players per side. Volleyball typically has six. That means more hands at the net, longer volleys, and a really intense game. It was also the perfect weekend to check out the sport. A tournament was on, ahead of a national championship that will happen over Labor Day weekend.

SummerStage Presents: Ifetayo Youth Ensemble

Since its inception in 1989, Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy has been dedicated to supporting the creative, educational, and vocational development of youth of African descent in Brooklyn and surrounding communities. The organization's name comes from the West African Yoruba word "ifetayo" meaning "love is enough for joy" and captures Ifetayo's approach to empowering youth, studying culture through the arts, and redefining community.

The Ifetayo Youth Ensemble (IYE) is an award-winning performance group, recognized for their combination of artistic excellence and exploration of social issues. Members are youth of the African Diaspora ages 12 - 19 residing in under resourced communities of central Brooklyn, who thrive under the opportunity for education, art-making, and self-determination. IYE creates high-caliber original, socially relevant, and interdisciplinary performance works.
