Weekend Walk in Chinatown on June 28, 2014

The Chinatown Business Improvement District (BID) will be hosting the second of three Weekend Walk events this summer, on Saturday, June 28, 2014, from 11am to 4pm, along Mott Street, between Canal to Worth Streets, in Manhattan. Free and open to the general public, attendees of all ages can enjoy entertainment, carnival games, face painting, paper cutting, giant Chinese & western chess, as well as purchase food and gifts from a variety of restaurants and shops.

This month's Weekend Walk activities feature an exciting knockout-boom combination in the form of an Olympic medalist and exciting BOOM! Popping demonstration. Mr. Zhang Zhilei, a professional boxer for Dynasty Boxing and 2008 silver medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will be doing an open boxing workout and signing autographs for fans. Courtesy of the Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD), attendees will get to see and hear, up close and personal, Boom!, the Museum's 3,200 pound cereal puffing gun exhibit, which will be debuted for the first time in Chinatown. Plus any visitor that goes to a merchant (in BID service area) on Saturday and comes back with a receipt, our Weekend Walk calligrapher will write their names in Chinese free-of-charge. For those feeling fit, this weekend, come and scale our first ever 30 ft Rock climbing wall (Also a historic first, courtesy of the NYPD).

Each year, the New York City Department of Transportation partners with community groups to present Weekend Walks - neighborhood events on multi-block stretches of commercial streets temporarily closed to vehicles and opened to walking and other activities. These multi-day events take place in all five boroughs from May through October. Local merchants' associations, community groups, and business improvement districts host Weekend Walks as a fun way to highlight local businesses and cultural institutions. They create wonderful opportunities for New Yorkers to gather, see their neighborhoods in a new way, and relax on weekends.

In addition to meeting Mr. Zhang Zhilei and witnessing the explosive power of Boom! On June 28, attendees can also learn about different organizations at our community booth area including Cantonese Society, Chinese Progressive Association, Transfiguration School, NY Chinese Cultural Center, Museum of Chinese in America, and H.T. Dance Co.

The third Weekend Walk of the summer season is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 26, 2014.

New Mandarin and Cantonese Business Courses Offered Free
at Chinatown Partnership

Courses Help Immigrant Merchants and Entrepreneurs Start, Operate, and Grow Their Businesses

The Chinatown Partnership and Chinatown Business Improvement District are proud to announce new Mandarin and Cantonese business courses and workshops to be offered in collaboration with NYC Business Solutions of the NYC Department of Small Businesses for free to immigrant small business owners and entrepreneurs.

The first workshops in Business Planning Basics will be offered in Mandarin on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm and in Cantonese on Thursday, June 26, 2014 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at the Chinatown Partnership offices. Three Chinatowns (Walking Tour)

Time: 9:30 AM Optional Dim Sum Breakfast, 10:45 AM Tour Start, 4:30 PM Tour Ends

Since the 1965 change in immigration laws, the Chinatown in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and the Chinatown in Flushing, Queens have developed in different ways and with different demographics than Manhattan's Chinatown. Tour leaders Joe Svehlak and Jack Eichenbaum, natives of Sunset Park, Brooklyn and Flushing, Queens respectively, will lead this tour in three parts, focusing on the transformation of these neighborhoods. Wellington Chen, executive director of the Chinatown Partnership, will lead a portion of the walk and a discussion of contemporary issues in Manhattan's Chinatown. The day will begin with an optional dim sum meal in Flushing, Queens at 9:30 AM. Please note that the cost of dim sum breakfast is not included. The tour will begin at 10:45 AM. Cost includes transportation from Flushing to Manhattan to Sunset Park by Chinatown van and or subway and a light lunch. The tour will conclude near 43rd Street and 4th Avenue in Brooklyn at 4:30 PM. Cost: $65 / $60 Members.

Volunteer to Teach English or Citizenship Classes in Chinatown

For new immigrants, learning English is a first step to full participation in American life or becoming a citizen. Help them take that first step by volunteering to teach English or Citizenship classes.

Requirements:

Must have good communication skills and a strong desire to help and work with new immigrants
Be available to teach two hours per week
Prior teaching experience preferred
Have a desire to further develop teaching skills
Must attend teacher training and meetings
Bilingual skills are a plus
Preference given to volunteers who can commit to teaching at least two semesters

City Installing Speed Bumps Near 3 Lower Manhattan Schools

LOWER MANHATTAN - The city is slated to build speed bumps near three Lower Manhattan schools where parents and local officials have long voiced traffic safety concerns.

The bumps will be installed behind Battery Park City's P.S./I.S. 276, on Little West Street, between First and Second places; in front of the Lower East Side's P.S. 2, at Pike and Rutgers streets; and in front of Chinatown's P.S. 124, on Division Street between Bowery and Market Street, the Department of Transportation said.

The DOT decided to add speed bumps near the three schools after the agency did a traffic analysis of the blocks, sparked by community concerns about the safety of children walking to school, a DOT spokesman said. The bumps are also part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's Vision Zero initiative, a plan meant to reduce traffic safety deaths.
