Free Mobile Legal Clinic Coming to Chinatown, Lower East Side

If you are in need of legal advice, there are two opportunities coming up. The New York Legal Assistance Group and the New York State Courts' Access to Justice Program will be bringing their mobile legal help center to Chinatown and the Lower East Side. Staff members are able to deal with housing, immigration and disability benefit issues, among other legal topics. The center will be set up at the following locations:
FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 10am to 3pm - at 155 East Broadway
MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 10am to 3pm - at 62 Mott Street (CCBA headquarters)
The free service is being made possible thanks to funding from City Council member Margaret Chin. The announcement was made today in conjunction with the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. Mayura: Blue Peacock

Mayura is the Sanskrit word for peacock, the rare and beautiful bird indigenous to the Indian subcontinent. Throughout history, it has been featured in poetry, literature, sculpture, painting, music, dance, mythology, and so on.
Choreographer Sonali Skandan uses classical poetry and literature to weave vivid images of the peacock from Indian myths and legends - from the powerful ancient Mayil Virutham which praises the peacock as Lord Muruga's vehicle, to the lilting epics of Kalidasa describing the peacock in the rains, as a reminder of Ram's longing for Sita, to the love songs of Andal and Mirabhai. The original music score has been composed by the renowned composer from India, Rajkumar Bharathi.

Concert: The Brothers Nazaroff

An evening of lost music from the Odessa underworld. In 1954, the mysterious outsider Yiddish troubadour Nathan "Prince" Nazaroff recorded a now-legendary album, "Jewish Freilach Songs" for Moe Asch and Folkways. The album has become a cult favorite for Yiddish music fans with all its discordant, obscure, jubilant and ecstatic glory. Join us in this special 60th Anniversary tribute to the Prince featuring The Brothers Nazaroff: Danik Nazaroff, Pasha Nazaroff, Meyshke Nazaroff, Zaelic Nazaroff, and Yankl Nazaroff, as we celebrate the original recording as well as the upcoming release of a new Smithsonian Folkways album by The Brothers.

To foodies far and wide, the soup dumplings at Joe's Shanghai are the stuff of legend. And for years, no other restaurant was able to replicate the structural wizardry of its dumplings. How did they manage to seal so much flavorful broth inside the delicate skin of a pork-and-crabmeat-filled dumpling? These days, a handful of Chinatown restaurants are giving the reigning champ a run for its money. At 456 Shanghai Cuisine, just a few blocks away on Mott Street, the wait is consistently shorter and the dumplings just as delicious. They're on the smaller side here, perfect for popping in your mouth all at once (after you've poked a hole to sip the hot broth, of course). Another must-try: the "fried tiny buns with pork," a white-bread bun, crisped on one side, that's filled with meat and-yes-that amazing soup-dumpling broth.

Free CPR Workshop at Chinatown Partnership

Chinatown Summer Internship Program 
|
This year, the Chinatown Partnership and Chinatown B.I.D. summer internship program welcomed high school and college interns from Stuyvesant High School, Baruch College, New York University, University of Buffalo and more. The cohort included Chinatown natives and those who are less familiar with the community, and new immigrants as well as second-generation Chinese Americans.
Over the past weeks, the interns helped organize Chinatown's Weekend Walks events, conduct merchant surveys of Hurricane Sandy's impacts, update the Chinatown Partnership's bilingual Neighborhood Community Resource Guide (to be released in the near future), conduct parking surveys, and developed bilingual content for the Chinatown Partnership and Chinatown BID's soon-to-be relaunched website.
We had the pleasure of introducing these interns to Chinese and Chinese American culture, history, and all the delicious foods in our neighborhood that many have never tried.
