Greetings!
When was the last time you heard someone in Terre Haute say there's nothing to do? That's right, no one says that anymore. You know why? It's called Downtown. Consider this week: Blueberry Festival, Relay for Life, Saratoga Dinner-Cabaret, WTHI Summer Bash, Clabber Girl BBQ Fest Challenge, REX Baseball and Day Camp, Crossroads Repertory Theatre, Library Events, Live Rockin' music at the Verve, Blu Katt and Coffee Grounds, Art Totality, Swope Family Day, Terre Haute Community Band Festival, ISU's Community School of the Arts Day Camps and TH Childrens Museum activities. And oh, by the way, every day downtown offers great dining, drinks and specialty shops. You know what this means, don't you? We're kind of a big deal. Stay cool Terre Haute. |

Members of the ISU community are invited to take an active role in the groundbreaking. Following a brief ceremony, we will begin framing the house, located at 2250 Chase Street at approximately 9 a.m. We are in need of volunteers to help with construction that day from 9 a.m. - noon and 12:30 - 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
Persons interested in volunteering July 26 or on the other designated workdays can sign up by going to
https://indstate.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_9nW7ioURFrsMpsE
For more information about ISU's Habitat House, how to volunteer or make a monetary donation, contact Jessica Starr, Center for Community Engagement, at 812-237-4491.
*The Center for Community Engagement invites ISU faculty, staff and alumni to make a difference in the life of a Terre Haute mother and her three children by supporting the construction of Terre Haute's 58th Habitat for Humanity House.
The home, the second one built by Indiana State, will be located in the Ryves Neighborhood in conjunction with a partnership between the institution and several non-profit agencies and organizations that serve the neighborhood.
We need your help. Commitments of both time and money are needed to make this campus-wide service project a success. The total cost for the four-bedroom home is $50,000. We have already raised $10,000 during our Houses for Habitat dinner in May, but in order to break ground we need to have $25,000.
We encourage faculty, staff, departments and organizations to participate in the "Board by Board" fundraiser.Your donations will assist with sponsoring pieces of the house.
Cash and checks are being collected at the Center for Community Engagement, Tirey Hall 134J. Checks should be made payable to the ISU Foundation. You can also donate online through the CCE website by going to http://www.indstate.edu/publicservice/events/habitat.aspx . Contributions of any amount will be greatly appreciated. Please submit you donations by July 31.
*The ISU Staff Council is doing this small project, with glass jars dropped off all over campus with the Habitat for Humanity/COINS FOR A COTTAGE label on them, and asking you to donate any loose change you might have every day.
If the jar in your area is full, please contact our Treasurer, Lori Vancza (X8337) and she will pick it up the money collected. We will also announce the final collection/pick-up date soon, so let's fill up the jars with coins! (And currency, too!)

Terre Haute Children's Museum
Online Brick Finder
In September 2010, the Terre Haute Children's Museum opened to rave reviews, and since then, we have welcomed more than 125,000 guests. But, before the Museum's doors could be opened, many people helped "build it now -- for the kids" by sponsoring a brick to honor their children, family members, coaches and friends. Now, these Museum supporters can pinpoint the exact location of their bricks with the Museum's new online Brick Finder.
and use the Search function to locate bricks by searching for the text that was placed on the brick or the name of the person who purchased the brick. The Brick Finder will then show where the brick is located on the outside walls of the Children's Museum. There is also a Browse button, which can be used to see all the bricks in each section. The Brick Finder site was created by Andy Kruth, who graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2011 with a degree in software engineering and computer science.
If you have not yet purchased a brick, or if you would like to sponsor another brick, you can also do that by visiting the Brick Finder site. The Terre Haute Children's Museum is a private, nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization, and the Museum's operating funds are generated by private contributions and earned income. By sponsoring a brick, you will help the Museum raise much-needed funding for educational programs and hands-on exhibits, and your brick sponsorship is considered a fully tax-deductible donation.
Kids' bricks, for children 18 and younger, are $79 and hold one line of up to 16 characters. These bricks are located near the field trip entrance on the Ohio Street side of the Museum. Bricks that hold two lines of up to 16 characters each are $199. The limestone blocks hold four lines of up to 16 characters each and are $1,000. The two-line bricks and 12-by-12 limestone blocks are located on the Eighth Street side of the building. Those who are purchasing a two-line brick or limestone to honor an educator can also choose to have their bricks placed in a special section called the Educators' Corner.
To download and print a copy of the brick sponsorship form, visit
More information about the Terre Haute Children's Museum can be found online at

Monday, August 6
At CASA, we believe that each and every child deserves a safe and permanent home. To that end, we recruit and train community volunteers to be Court Appointed Special Advocates to do just that, advocate for abused and neglected homes. We just completed a class of 15 new CASA volunteers. Even with those volunteers taking 1 or 2 cases, we still have a waitlist of 30 children for that special person to be a voice for them in Court. We are committed to providing a CASA volunteer to each and every child that is in need of one. Each child's case is a little different, but the impact, as you know, one volunteer can have on a child is overwhelming when you stop to think and understand what you are doing for that child.
CASA will begin training a new group of volunteers on August 6. The training curriculum is comprised of 30 hours pre-service training covering topics from the role of the CASA volunteer to laws, report writing to understanding children and families among other topics. In addition, there will be juvenile court room observation.
We know there are caring people out there who may not know about CASA volunteering and/or have been waiting to get involved... please do not wait. We need you; the children need you, now. Please reflect on how you as a part of this community can make a significant difference in the lives of children.
You could be the missing piece in a child's life! Powerless children need powerful voices! You could be that person!
Anyone in the community who wants to get involved should contact the Vigo County CASA office at 812-231-5658, email Nikki.Fuhrmeister@VigoCounty.IN.gov, or visit www.VigoCountyCASA.com.
