Message from Pastor Mike

Béchamel, Velouté, Espagnole, Tomat, and Hollandaise, these are the Five French Mother Sauces. They've been foundational in cooking for centuries. I was listening to a chef on the radio who described what he feels when he makes the ancient sauces. I don't remember his exact words, but essentially he said that every time he makes a Hollandaise sauce, and gets it right, he is somehow united with all of those great chefs who have made the very same thing countless times before. For hundreds of years chefs have used the same few ingredients and the same technique to create the exact same thing. When I heard this I was struck by the notion that every time I whisk flour into the grease I'm joining together with all those who have made gravy before me, and who now rest from their labors.
We have a handful of recipes in our family that span multiple generations. The family Bolognese Sauce comes from dad's side of the family, Chicken and Peaches comes from mom's side. When we make those recipes somehow it's more than just dinner. It reconnects us with our heritage. In an inexplicable way the aroma of our decedents are in the kitchen with us.
In the creeds of the church we affirm our union with those who have lived and died in the faith. When we recite The Apostles' Creed we say, "I believe in the communion of saints". Each time we say those words we acknowledge our connection to those who have gone before. At the communion table these words are spoken, "And so with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn...". The communion liturgy gives us a little whiff of our spiritual heritage, who are now among the company of heaven. As the chefs connect to the great chefs of the past by making the same sauce as their ancestors, we too connect to our spiritual ancestors by repeating their practices. Communion, Baptism, and the Lord's Prayer are practices that have been uniting people in their worship of God all the way back to Jesus' first disciples.
Next time you whisk grease into gravy, perhaps you'll take a moment to remember your loved ones who have gone on to glory. And next time you take the loaf and the cup, perhaps you'll remember those saints of the church who have been part of your spiritual heritage.
Blessings,
Mike

OUR NEXT CHRIST UMC & HARVESTERS FOOD DROP
is Thursday, August 16 from 2-5pm

We helped 285 families at the July food drop.

We can always use help from volunteers anytime between 12:30 & 6:00!

As is usual in the summer months, we are a little short of volunteers. We really need volunteers between 5:00 to 6:00 or so on Food Drop days to help clean up, get leftover food onto the truck, and unload it at the Noland Road Community Services League cooler at Noland & Truman Rd. It goes pretty fast with extra hands helping out ...
