Message from Pastor Mike
My friend Charlie is trying to catch a raccoon. The raccoon is eating food out of Charlie's birdfeeder, and so it's time for him to go. I've loaned him my trap, but so far it hasn't worked. For two nights now, he's been frying eggs and making peanut butter sandwiches to bait the trap, but this raccoon refuses to go in and eat them. Instead, he reaches his hand between the bars and pulls the eggs and sandwiches out through the gaps. To get the food that was out of his reach, he dug under the trap and pulled it out through the gaps in the bottom. This raccoon is wise. There is an easier way for him to get what he wants. All he has to do is walk through the open end of the trap and get it. When he does, the trap will close on him. He'll have his meal, but he'll be trapped. This raccoon isn't fooled by the lure of an easy meal. He's too smart for that. He isn't willing to trade his life for an easy egg sandwich.
Unfortunately, there are many whose temptations lure them into traps. Their eyes see something, their hand reaches, and then it's too late. The trap springs, and they're stuck with the consequences. About the temptation to sin Jesus said, "If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away ... if your right hand causes you to sin cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell." (Matthew 5:29-30) Jesus used a lot of hyperbole to make his points. He's not advocating for self-mutilation, but he is pointing out how ridiculous it is that we would let our actions destroy our lives.
Charlie is still trying to catch that raccoon. He's going to keep trying different baits and different ways to lure that raccoon into the trap. Sin is relentless like that. Temptation's traps are baited in different ways, and they're presented in different forms, but the wise are able to see through them as clearly as that raccoon sees the bars of that trap. The door of the trap is open and the fried eggs beckon him to come, but the wisdom of this raccoon overcomes it's desire. Before Cain killed his brother, God said to him, "Sin is lurking at the door; it's desire is for you, but you must master it." Unfortunately, Cain didn't heed that warning, and sin's trap closed on him.
The good news is that we are not on our own to avoid temptation's traps. God is with us in our struggles. We are given the power to break with sin through the Spirit of God, who gives us eyes to see beyond the temptation and the wisdom to say no to its lure.
Blessings,
Mike
