Rector's Reflections

What's in a Name?

All names are powerful, but Jesus' name is the most powerful of all. We use names as a concise way to convey complex meanings: being able to call someone by name means you know something important about that person, and being called by name means you are known. On Sunday we celebrate the privilege and the power of calling God by name, as well as how deeply we know God and are known by God, through Jesus.

Our texts for Sunday affirm the power of the name we're given at baptism: child of God. The name of God is described in active terms: being blessed and claimed in the name of God does something to us. It ennobles and empowers us in ways we do not deserve and did nothing to earn (Ps. 8, Num. 6:27). The name of Jesus itself is described as being a powerful actor in our world and in our lives: "at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Phil. 2:10-11).

Our gospel reading from Luke finds the holy family in the midst of the ongoing extraordinary events of Jesus' birth. When the shepherds leave and the angels return to heaven, we can see a shift toward the ordinary. Luke records that Mary and Joseph made sure that Jesus went through the usual rites of passage for a Jewish boy; years pass between these milestones, unrecorded. But in his ordinary, everyday life, Jesus carried an extraordinary name. We carry the name of Jesus and the mark of his cross not only in extraordinary times, but in our ordinary, everyday lives. It's a name that is active and powerful in us and through us each day. [Sundays and Seasons, 2017]

In Christ's Name,
Bill+

NEW BIBLE STUDY Starts on Thursday, January 5th.

Join us as we more deeply into God's Word. We will walk through Romans to bring contemporary application of Scripture to life. Discover how you can participate more fully in God's kingdom as we read through Paul's letter to the Romans. We gather Thursday afternoons 3:00-4:00 pm followed by a brief Eucharist in the Beck Memorial Library.

Now it's time to take down the Christmas decorations.
Join us at 9:00 AM Saturday, January 7th.  All are welcome!

 Christmas Eve Family Worship

Photo taken Christmas Eve 2017

In the above photo, Rev. Bill Petersen invites the children to hear a Christmas message.  At the conclusion of the Christmas Message, Rev. Petersen gave each child an ornament and an activity book.

In the photo below, the congregation which filled the sanctuary and choir loft, sing the Candle Hymn, Silent Night.  Prior to singing the hymn, the Eucharistic Ministers lit the candles nearest the aisle.  Those candles then gave light to the other candles.  The glow from the candles filled the darkened sanctuary and symbolizes Christ, the light of the world.

Ritva Torma

Ritva Torma has been worshiping at All Saints since February 2015.  Ritva moved to Wolfeboro from Canada to be near her daughter, Annie, and her husband Jeff.  Ritva is from Finland and loves Wolfeboro and All Saints. Ritva is a member of the Altar Guild, and also helps with the coffee hour. We are grateful that Ritva is worshiping with us.
Penny and Bill Meyer

Both Bill and Penny Meyer have been active at All Saints since moving to New Durham four years ago from Prescott, Arizona.  As a member of our Vestry Bill is our terrific Junior Warden.  Bill is a member of the Thursday morning Bible Study Group, and chairs the Property Committee. Both attend the Thursday afternoon Bible Study that is led by Rev. Petersen.  Both are members of the All Saints Preschool Board. Penny and Don Johnson send out birthday and anniversary cards to those in our congregation celebrating those events.  Penny is an organizer of the prayer chain, and heads our mission to sponsor a high school education for a student in Kenya.  That program Education for Every Child, E.F.A.C., is supported by our mission dollars.  Bill and Penny, thank-you for your ministry and for worshiping at All Saints.

Dedications for Altar Flowers

ALTAR FLOWERS   If you typically like to provide a list of dedications for altar flowers, chapel flowers or candles for the year, the Parish Administrator, Deb, is requesting that you please provide that list either by email or leave in the office for her by the end of this year.  Please indicate on the list if you wish to pay for the year and Deb can provide you with a receipt. If you would like to pay at the time of dedication a reminder can be sent the week before.  This will be helpful in preparing next year's chart.  Names will be put on the new chart when the dedication is received.
A reminder to those who like to dedicate throughout the year, please complete a card with the information needed for the dedication or send an email request to [email protected].

Caregivers Christmas Tree

Caregivers is a thirty year old program that provides transportation for clients to medical appointments throughout New England.  The program which began at All Saints is partially supported by our mission dollars and a grant from ECW.
