College fair showcases TGI investment
TGI members visited Mosaic Youth Theatre in Detroit for their annual college fair on Oct. 6. TGI's 2012 grant supported this event, which brought university recruiters from all over the country looking for new talent for their arts, theatre and dance programs.
College fairs such as the one Mosaic hosts are critical for cities like Detroit, where only 1.8 percent of Detroit Public School students are considered college-ready in all subjects. TGI was treated to private performances by Mosaic's young talent, who were warming up to audition for the college recruiters. We witnessed some slam poetry, moving and comic monologues, and a raucous show tune from the musical Kiss Me Kate.
Judging from the show, it looks like Mosaic's youth are well on their way to successful college careers in the arts. TGI had a great time, and our thanks go to Mosaic for hosting us at this important and moving event!

Leaving a legacy: Planned giving
A planned gift is any charitable gift, immediate or deferred, that considers an individual's personal tax, financial, and estate planning circumstances. Planned gifts can be as simple as an outright gift of cash, or as sophisticated as a charitable trust or foundation that is integrated into a multifaceted financial and estate plan.
Benefits of Planned Giving
- Planned gifts have significant tax advantages
- Planned gifts can help minimize the estate tax.
- Planned gifts ensure the long-term support of organizations that you care about, even beyond your lifetime.
Planned giving should involve the services of a professional advisor who can discuss your personal philanthropic goals, explain legal terminology, and detail the pros and cons of different types of giving - including how various options will affect your tax obligations.
For more on on planned giving and leaving a legacy for the future, please consult CAAP's Guide to Arab American Giving, and read more Philanthropy A-Z articles on our blog.

CAAP receives a warm Ahlan wa Sahlan in Boston
CAAP staff and board members were in Boston this month for our semi-annual board meeting, to share CAAP's vision with community members at a reception hosted by one of our board members, and to conduct site visits with two grantees, the Center for Arabic Culture (CAC) and Boston Palestine Film Festival (BPFF). Many of CAAP's staff and board members were moved to tears by the BPFF's closing film, The War Around Us, which was screened at the beautiful Museum of Fine Arts. As BPFF funders, it was powerful to see so many people attending the sold-out show. All of the films screened annually at the festival address important issues surrounding Palestine and its history, culture, and geographically dispersed society. CAAP is proud to support their great work.

As a major highlight of our Boston travels, CAAP advisory board member Ghaleb Daouk and his wife Rima hosted a reception at their home to introduce the work of CAAP to members of the Boston community. It was a wonderful evening full of positive energy thanks to the generosity of the hosts and the liveliness, interest and expertise of those who attended. CAAP staff and board members were honored to have the opportunity to share our mission, services and vision for the future with more than 30 community members who attended the event. We were also delighted to participate in the spirited display of traditional Arab music by attendees and special guest Simon Shaheen. Thank you to all our hosts (especially CAC Boston staff, the BPFF, the Museum of Fine Art and the Daouks) for making our Boston visit a resounding success!
New report spotlights Arab American donors The Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) recently produced a report titled Diversity and Inclusion in Michigan Philanthropy: Voices of Arab American Donors as part of its "Transforming Michigan Philanthropy Through Diversity and Inclusion" initiative. The publication is a follow-up from a listening tour event held in partnership with the Center for Arab American Philanthropy in May, where Arab American leaders and donors discussed their needs and aspirations as philanthropists. Drawing on research from CMF and other sources as well as the findings of the listening tour, the report aims to illuminate the unique goals, challenges and perspectives of Arab American donors. This is one of the first times that a major philanthropic institution such as CMF has featured research and personal testimonies focusing on Arab American giving. We are proud to be part of the movement towards greater diversity in philanthropy, and we encourage you to download your own copy of this groundbreaking and informative report.
