Our Savior's This Week

Dear Church,

Like many of you, I have been camped in front of the television for the past few days, watching the Summer Olympic Games from London. Every four years, I tell myself I'm not going to watch with such intensity, and then I get drawn in by the profiles of the athletes and their personal stories. Maybe you, too?

The motto of the Olympics (that name is trademarked, did you know that?) is Citius, Altius, Fortius; Swifter, Higher, Stronger. Makes sense, doesn't it, since nearly every competition compels athletes to excel in one of those adjectives. I'd like to add "more accurate" with the inclusion of archery as an Olympic event! Nonetheless, the goal of these amazing world class athletes is to be swifter, higher and stronger than all other competitors.

So, what's the goal of a Christian? If it's not to run faster, jump higher and lift more than our competition (whoever that is), what adjectives would be appropriate for me, and for you, in our lives of faith? I would offer these: aecus (kinder), prolixus (more generous), and amicus (more loving).

And compared to what or whom? Kinder than the cable guy? More generous than your mother-in-law? More loving than a Packer fan? No! But rather, kinder than you were yesterday, more generous than you used to be, more loving than last week. It's a journey. Our lives in Christ are not a competition, but rather a marathon that we all run together. The goal is not to win, it is to finish...together.

See you in Church Atque (soon!)

Faith Formation Registration News

Registration is now open for Faith Formation (Sunday School, Confirmation & Youth Groups) for the fall.  Parents may register their children, ages 2 years - 12th grade, for Sunday mornings at 9:15 am or Wednesday evenings. (The 10:30 am Faith Formation will not be offered this fall due to lack of consistent adult leadership and the limited number of families who indicated 10:30 as their preference, according to a congregational survey taken this summer.)  Parents may register online at www.oslcstillwater.org.  And YES, we can still use some adult leaders at both of these Faith Formation sessions.  REGISTER NOW!

Welcome Back Pastor Craig!

The preacher on Sunday, August 19 will be Craig Wexler, who served as our intern pastor in 2008-09, and is now pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Hill City, SD.  Our 8AM service will be held, as usual, in the sanctuary.  Our 9:30AM worship will be at Pioneer Park followed by a picnic lunch (Please bring a salad or dessert to share.  Hotdogs and hamburgers will be served by our high school youth.)  If you'd like to drive or ride in a car pool, we'll be leaving from the east parking lot at 9:10 AM.

New Director of Proclaim

We're pleased to announce that Sharon Ronning is the new director of Proclaim!, our women's vocal ensemble.  Gwen Johnson led this group for five years, until last spring.  So, thank you Gwen, and welcome Sharon!

Let the roofing begin!

Monday morning our old roof will begin disappearing, and a new one applied in its place.  This work should take about two weeks.  Your gifts are appreciated, so that we can complete this task with as little debt as possible.  Cards are available at the Welcome Desk.  Thank you!

Kurdish Women Presenting Stories and Music on August 16th
Men, women and children are invited to this year's Salad Supper for an extra special time with 5 young women from Turkey who will entertain with their music.  These young women have received scholarships from the oldest Lutheran Mission - Lutheran Mideast Development - and LMD is bringing them to the Twin Cities so they can share their stories.  Information about each of these women and about LMD can be found on the display in the gathering area.  Bring a friend and a salad on August 16th at 6:00 p.m. at Our Savior's.  Beverages and dessert will be provided.  You are also welcome to come just for the program which begins at 6:45.  A free will offering will be taken and will go to LMD.
