The Eisenhower West Steering Committee, a City Manager appointed 12 member group of the community, was organized to provide guidance on the Eisenhower West Small Area Plan process, specifically focusing on the civic engagement process, agenda setting, outreach and communications, and some technical content elements, such as the project scope as well as development scenarios for consideration in the Eisenhower West transportation study. The group will hold its fifth meeting where the agenda includes presentations about planning efforts in surrounding areas (Fairfax County and Landmark/Van Dorn)and review of the draft vision and principles (Mon. 9/8, 7:00 PM, Samuel Tucker Elementary School, Multi-Purpose Room/Mini Auditorium).        

 

The City of Alexandria invites the public to attend an informal Open House for the Public Art Plan where attendees will have an opportunity to learn about the Public Art Plan and provide input on the plan development. The City of Alexandria Office of the Arts is working with the team of Todd Bressi with Via: Partnership and Lardner - Klein Landscape Architects in developing a city-wide public art master plan. These open house events are used to gather information and opinions that will inform the consultants' understanding of the nature of the community, public space and community arts, as well as the character and use of valued community spaces, in Alexandria (Tues. 9/9 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM, St. Elmo's Coffee Pub, 2300 Mt. Vernon Ave). 

City Council will hold their first legislative meeting of FY2015 where items of interest include a reappointment to the

Industrial Development Authority, a new appointment to the Planning Commission and Consideration of an Ordinance approving and authorizing the acquisition of property by the City of Alexandria at 204 Strand Street, the exchange of undefined potential alley access way rights between the City and multiple property owners in the 200 Strand Street, and exchange of property between the City at 0 Prince Street, 200 Strand Street and a portion of 204 Strand Street and associated riparian rights and the Old Dominion Boat Club at 1 King Street, 2 King Street and associated riparian rights (Tues. 9/9 at 7:00 PM, City Hall, Council Chambers).   

 

The Campagna Center's Business Leaders Circle is holding a program featuring Brad Edwards, Director of Athletics, George Mason University and former Washington Redskins defensive back (Weds. 9/10, 7:30 AM, Campagna Center registration required).


The first meeting of the Dominion Virginia Power 230 kV project Ad Hoc Work Group will take place this week, where the group will review the mission for the Working Group and receive a presentation from Dominion Virginia Power on the need for the project. This group was established by City Council to examine quality of life, economic, electric reliability, and environmental and transportation issues (Thurs. 9/11, 7:00 PM, City Hall, Sister Cities Meeting Room).

 

City Council will also hold their monthly public hearing where items of interest will be published later this week at this link (Sat. 9/13 at 9:30 AM, City Hall, Council Chambers).

 

The 12th annual Alexandria King Street Art Festival will take place this weekend on King Street (Sat. 9/13, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Sun. 9/14, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM).

 

Designed to bring community members together to celebrate Alexandria's diversity, Alexandria Multicultural Fest features entertainment for all ages including live music and activities representing the region's cultures. Performances include music from "Rainbow Rock Band," "The Johnny Artis Band" and "Melodica Oriental," as well as a variety of dance styles. Free games, demonstrations and activities will highlight a broad range of cultures and a wide variety of crafts and cuisines will be available for purchase (Sat. 9/13, noon- 4:00 PM, Four Mile Run Park Community Building, 4109 Mt. Vernon Ave).
