Van Aken District Call for Artists
Together with  LAND studio , the City announces its first Call for Artists for public art in the  Van Aken District . Artists from Shaker Heights, Greater Cleveland, and with ties to the region are strongly encouraged to participate. The artwork will be installed during fall 2018. Deadline for submissions is May 11.
Landmark Commission Announces Instagram Photo Contest
The Shaker Heights Landmark Commission seeks submissions to its sixth annual Preservation Month Photo Contest. The contest was created in honor of National Preservation Month, which is celebrated each May by preservation organizations across the country. In a nod to the widespread use of cell phone cameras and social media, this year’s contest will be based in Instagram. Submissions will be identified by using #PreserveSH18.

The contest encourages residents and visitors to submit images that showcase what makes Shaker “Shaker.” Photos can highlight a particular architectural detail, landmark building, neighborhood, street, park, place to eat or shop, view, or anything else that represents Shaker Heights to the photographer.
The contest runs from May 1 to June 30.
Get Involved with Come, Play! Fest
Come Play Fest 2018
A block party meets field day meets festival for all! The inaugural Come, Play! Fest on June 23, from 12-6 pm, is held in partnership with the City of Shaker Heights and the Moreland neighborhood. Food, music, art and interactive games — a summertime event to stretch out, sip lemonade, and simply soak up some sunshine!

Spring Ice Spectacular

The annual Ice Spectacular showcases the skills of the Shaker Heights Figure Skating Club and the Shaker Heights Learn-to-Skate program. Location: Thornton Park Ice Arena (3301 Warrensville Center Rd.). Call the Recreation Department at 216-491-1295 for ticket information.
Household Hazardous Waste Roundup

Bring your household items to the Service Center (15600 Chagrin Blvd.) for disposal. Items accepted: oil or solvent-based paints, sealers, primers, varnishes, polyurethanes, shellacs, spray paints, automotive fluids, kerosene, gasoline, lighter fluid, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, paint thinners, mineral spirits, turpentine, caustic household cleaners, adhesives, roof tar, driveway sealer, and mercury. Intro to Home Ownership

The Home Repair Resource Center will offer a two-hour workshop for first-time home buyers. The workshop will cover steps to home ownership, from mortgage application to closing and beyond. Family Connections Meet & Greet

The Nature Center's 36th annual Plant Sale offers a beautiful variety of affordable herbs, vegetables, perennials, annuals, hard-to-find natives, and hanging baskets selected by a local team of experienced horticulturalists. Ribbon Run 5K and 2-Mile Walk

Join the Shaker Heights Police Department for this 5K run and 2-mile walk that benefits the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center. Celebrate the lives of those affected by cancer post-race with refreshments and other fun festivities.

• The race will begin and end at the Green Road RTA stop.
• $25 if registered by May 20; $30 thereafter.
• Complimentary performance t-shirt to the first 300 registered.
• Awards will be given to top finishers.
Memorial Day Parade
Monday, May 28

Join fellow community members in front of City Hall (3400 Lee Rd.) to honor those who lost their lives in war with a wreath at the war memorial and a gun salute. Immediately after, the parade steps off and follows Van Aken Blvd. east to Farnsleigh Rd., finishing at Thornton Park. The pool will open at 9 am on Memorial Day.

Dr. Stephen M. Wilkins Appointed Interim Superintendent
The Shaker Heights Board of Education announced the selection of Dr. Stephen M. Wilkins as Interim Superintendent for the term July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019. Dr. Wilkins brings management experience that includes strengths in human resources, strategic planning, logistics, project management and security services. He currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations and Human Resources and will return to that role when his service as Interim Superintendent concludes.
