| MAYOR DANIEL T. BROWN |
Mayor's Message
Since becoming mayor I have been
impressed with the ability and
commitment of the people who work
for the City. I have always believed
that hiring and keeping great people
is critical in achieving excellence in
any organization – public, nonprofit,
or private.
During my first few years I heard a
lot about our compensation structure.
Frankly much of what I heard concerned
me. Were our wages and
benefits what they should be? Were some long-term employees
paid at a level that did not adequately reflect their experience?
I wanted unbiased, clear, answers to these questions. So last
year I put together a broad-based team with representation from
administration, council, and employee groups to guide and
oversee a study of our compensation. I asked them to recommend
any changes necessary to bring our compensation to that
of peers.
As you know by now we found that we are indeed behind in
our compensation. As a result we are taking steps this year and
in the next two fiscal years to bring every employee's salary up
to market level, and to put a system in place to keep salaries
competitive and to avoid salary compression in the future. To
reach this goal will mean that salary adjustments will not be the
same for everyone. However each employee will receive at
least a 2.5% increase in each of the next three years.
We're doing this because it's the right and fair thing to do for
our employees as well as for all of our residents. Thank you for
the good things that you do every
day to make Knoxville an even
better place to live, work
and raise a family.
Sincerely,
Dan
