Dear City Yogis,
This month we're celebrating our Lucky 13th Anniversary. The number 13 gets a bad rap, but it's actually quite auspicious in many cultures and spiritual traditions. For example, in Hebrew each letter is also a number and every word has a numerical value. There's an entire branch of esoteric science called "gematria" devoted to the study of hidden meanings in scripture using this method of numerical correlation--one such correlation is that the words UNITY and LOVE both have the value of 13.
In Italy, 13 is considered to be a lucky number. In Judaism, 13 signifies the age at which a boy/girl matures and becomes a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Dan Marino, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O'Neal, and many other sports legends proudly wore 13 on their jersey during their careers.
There are 13 full moons per year, in fact the moon moves 13 degrees around the earth every day. It Takes 13 days to change from Full Moon to New Moon and 13 days to change back with 1 day Full and 1 day New to equal 28 days of the Lunar Cycle.
We could go on but you get the point...
June also brings the first day of Summer! We wish you all a fantastic summer and as always, we look forward to seeing you on and off your mat.
Cheers, Anthony & Rebecca and The City Yoga Staff

Maud Nadler
June's featured teacher

Maud Nadler is a graduate of City Yoga's 2009 teacher training program. She began practicing yoga five years ago and has never looked back. One of the many things that Maud loves about the practice of yoga is the way it keeps challenging and changing her perspective both on and off the mat. That empowering feeling is something that Maud hopes to share in her classes. Her passion for teaching is apparent in her clear instruction, focus on alignment, and creative energy.
CY: What book are you currently reading? Maud: Most Talkative by Andy Cohen
CY: What band, musician, song, genre of music makes you get up and groove and sing? Maud: Graceland by Paul Simon
CY: If you were on an island and already had the common necessities, sunscreen, food, water, and yoga mat of course, what else would you have to have? Maud: A dog.
CY: Who is your favorite fine artist? Maud: R. Crumb
CY: What is it about your students that most inspires you?
Maud: Their love of the practice of yoga. Whether they are beginners just starting to fall in love or more experienced uncovering new ways they love yoga.
Watching them connect to their bodies and breath inspires me to keep inspiring them.
"Maud is a radiant example of how hard work and dedication can transform your life. The reluctant yoga student became the blossoming yoga teacher. She understands her students on a very deep level and can make the adjustments to guide them on their path in a truly meaningful way."
-Anthony Benenati
"Maud is incredibly supportive of her students. It's so encouraging to have an instructor who gets excited when you experience a breakthrough in one of your postures. I often find myself walking into Maud's class lethargic and unmotivated and leaving feeling energized and inspired to make the most of my day." -Ted Sroka
As our featured teacher, all of Maud's classes are ONLY $10 for the month of June!

Adhikara = "Studentship" = Ted Sroka 40/40 special turns into 138 days straight of yoga....and counting!

"On June 1, I will have practiced yoga every day for 138 days -- more than one third of a year. This started when I signed up for the 40/40 challenge in January. I had practiced yoga off on and on for several years, but never with the same consistency as I do now. Last year I practiced an average of once a month.
I find it difficult to describe what has changed since I started practicing every day because so many things have changed. I've noticed a lot of positive changes in my practice. I've lost weight, I'm leaner and my muscles are more defined.
But what stands out the the most is my change in attitude. Negative thoughts have been replaced with positive ones. I am much more forgiving and accepting of myself. I don't take things as personally as I used to. I am more present. I am more relaxed when meeting new people. I find myself motivated to become an active participant in my life, pursuing goals instead of watching TV or getting on the internet.
I remember dragging myself out of bed the first few weeks in January to get to Yoga Hour by 9am, telling myself that I could go back to bed when I got home if I still felt like it. Now I find myself looking forward to and getting excited about the next day's practice.
I'd like to thank City Yoga for offering the 40/40 challenge. If I hadn't signed up, I'd probably be practicing once a week and would not have experienced all of these positive changes in my life. I'd also like to express my gratitude to all of the instructors at City Yoga for their support, kindness and encouragement, especially Maud who has been an inspiration to me".

Women in Transition (Part 2)
A four-part series exploring the female animal
In this second of our four part series, you will be lead through a playful, creative and inspiring practice to get your juices flowing. We will then settle in to create a project for you to keep that will remind you everyday of your power, creativity and desire to express yourself. No experience of either yoga or art needed...in fact it's hardly art, it's more like play time!
Rebecca & Melissa, friends for almost 7 years have joined up to create a fun day for women to play and cultivate relationships that go beyond our mats, the dinner table, and the bar top. They both love working with people and are looking forward to this day with you!
Rebecca Benenati has been in the business of Health and Fitness since 1992. Her yoga practice has not only become a way of life, it has become the one single thing that keeps her grounded, sane, happy, challenged and strong. As a stepmother and a mother of two, Rebecca knows the challenges of everyday life so her classes are tough, though not just physically. She is deeply inspired to make space in her classes for her students to feel what is going on in their lives. This, she believes is the only way to fully embody the lessons right in front of them on their mat.
Melissa Brohner-Schneider is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Registered Art Therapist and a Certified Infant Mental Health Specialist with nearly two decades of experience. She has a private practice in Sherman Oaks, where she works with children, adults and families, often using art therapy techniques to deepen the exploration of issues. Achieve More By Doing Less
Doing less to allow more in your yoga practice.
Ancient yogic texts describe thousands of pathways (nadis) for energy to flow through all the body's tissues, from bones to organs to muscles--some pathways are more important than others. Unnecessary tension in the body can constrict key channels and interrupt energy flow, interfering with the health benefits of a regular yoga practice.
The Alexander Technique is a mode of body re-education to allow more ease and less tension in the body and mind. This relatively modern modality can help practitioners of today reconnect with some of the benefits of an ancient art like yoga.
This practice will focus on maintaining healthy and engaged alignments from foundation, to asana and through transition while doing less in the superficial muscles of the body. With less tension, we will explore the experience of more ease in the practice.
Saturday, June 16th
1:30pm FREE!
