Now Accepting Applications for the City of Elmhurst's
Walking and Biking Work Group

City Council recently approved a "Walking and Biking Work Group" to serve as an advisory group to the City, as suggested in the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan adopted in 2021. The group will work to build relationships with local groups and institutions to offer consistent, year-round education and activities that encourage walking and biking. The group will consist of individuals appointed by the Mayor, who are interested in advancing these initiatives. Members of the working group would be selected following a public request for applications. The group will be led by a Chair and approximately 15 members. More information... APPLY HERE!
Eat Your Heart Out: Iconic Chicagoland Foods opens on June 24

Ketchup on a hot dog? Should your Italian beef be dipped or dry? Tavern style or deep dish? Chicagoans have strong opinions about those foods that have made the city famous – namely the trifecta of pizza, hot dogs and Italian beef.

This summer, the Elmhurst History Museum takes on the hotly debatable topic that is close to our hearts (and waistlines): the iconic foods of Chicago and its suburbs. The new exhibit, Eat Your Heart Out: Iconic Chicagoland Foods, opens this summer at the Elmhurst History Museum and will be on display from June 24 through October 2, 2022. Visitors will learn about the origins of the “big three” and other well known Chicago eats through engaging displays, photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia. The history of many classic Chicago food traditions will be explored as well as the often colorful innovators and establishments that earned the devotion of generations of foodies, from Lou Malnati’s and Portillo’s to Johnnie’s, Nick and Vito’s and many more.

To expand on the exhibit themes, the Elmhurst History Museum’s menu of programs will also be Chicago food focused. Check out the calendar section of this newsletter and visit the museum’s website to learn about the monthly Museum Maker Monday drop-in programs for families, the Picnic on Park event on July 10, a lecture with popular historian Leslie Goddard, a Family Pizza Workshop, Trivia Night at Pints, and lots more.

Roadway Resurfacing

This summer, the City will undertake several roadway improvement projects throughout the City. First, the City will be performing our normal annual Contract Paving Program where both asphalt and concrete streets are resurfaced. Second, a reconstruction of Van Buren Street (west of Spring Road to Salt Creek) and Crescent Avenue (Poplar Avenue) will take place using REBUILD IL grants. Lastly, Brush Hill Road will also be reconstructed (from Euclid to Salt Creek) using MFT funds. All of these improvements are necessary as the roadways need routine resurfacing maintenance or have met their useful life and need to be reconstructed. The 2022 Contract Paving Program will continue through Labor Day. Both the Van Buren/Crescent and Brush Hill reconstructions will start this summer and be completed this fall. Affected residents and businesses will be notified of exact construction dates in advance of the work commencing.
