Take Place on Saturday, October 3, 2015

MifflinMifflin Township Division of Fire Kicks Off Fire Prevention Week October 4-10, 2015
Community Open House to take place on Sunday, October 4 at Fire Station 131

The Mifflin Township Division of Fire will kick off this year's Fire Prevention Week with an open house held on Sunday, October 4, 2015 from 1 - 4 pm at Fire Station 131, located at 475 Rocky Fork Blvd.

The day will begin with the spectacular MedFlight One, which will touch down around 2 p.m., fire rescue demonstrations, a visit from fire mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog, and pumpkin painting for the kids, among other festivities.

Through educational, family-oriented activities, such as tours of the fire station, meet and greet with the township's firefighters, displays of current emergency vehicles, and fire safety demonstrations and tips, Gahanna residents can learn more about fire prevention and safety.

Along with firefighters and safety advocates nationwide, Mifflin Township Division of Fire is joining forces with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) during Fire Prevention Week, October 4-10. Hear the "beep" where you sleep. That's the message behind this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, in which families are reminded that every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm.

According to the latest NFPA research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

"In a fire, seconds count," said Mifflin Fire Chief Fred Kauser. "Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out."

Mifflin Township Division of Fire wants to remind Gahanna residents to:
  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do.
  • Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don't respond properly.
  • Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.
To learn more about smoke alarms and National Fire Prevention Week visit NFPA's website.  For more information about the Mifflin Township Division of Fire open house, contact 614.471.4494.

Holiday
Gahanna Convention & Visitors Bureau Puts a New Twist
on an Old Holiday Tradition

This year, the Gahanna Convention & Visitors Bureau is offering some fun new additions to its annual celebration to help usher in the holiday season.

The season kicks off on Sunday, November 22, 2015 in Gahanna's Creekside District.
Families can stroll the downtown streets of Gahanna between 3 - 7:30 p.m., taking part in holiday crafts from area businesses, enjoying holiday-inspired entertainment, seeing real-live reindeers, shopping for unique gifts from local businesses and artisans, and posing with their best smiles at holiday "Selfie Stations" inspired by the most popular attractions from past Gahanna's Holiday Lights parades. All the festivities throughout the day will lead up to the Grand Tree Illumination at Creekside and of course, a visit from Santa Claus.

"We are excited about the changes to our holiday celebration," said Laurie Jadwin, Executive Director for the Gahanna Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Last year we began to introduce expanded holiday activities before the parade and received such a fabulous response that we decided to take all of the elements that people loved most about the parade: the lights, the music and Santa's debut-and present them in a way that allows people to enjoy them throughout the day rather than just for a few moments."

According to Jadwin, families can expect even more holiday activities, vendors, shopping and holiday entertainment, but the new festival-like format allows for more engagement with neighbors and Gahanna businesses at a leisurely pace.

Detailed information on the Holiday Lights Celebration schedule, as well as other upcoming holiday events and opportunities including the Gingerbread House Contest, Santa 5K Run and Lil' Reindeer Dash, and Annual Holiday Character Breakfast, can be found at www.visitgahanna.com.
