Holiday Shopping and Personal Safety Tips from Gahanna Police

As we embark on the last few days before the Christmas holiday, Gahanna Police wants to remind citizens to be on guard and vigilant, as criminals will be shopping and will be seeking out their victims.  Below are few tips to make sure you and your loved ones have a safe and happy holiday season.

Basic shopping safety tips:
  • Keep all purses and bags zipped and snapped closed.
  • Do not flash large amounts of cash when paying for merchandise.
  • If using a debit card, keep the card close to your body so the card number will not be able to be photographed by a cell phone.
  • Shop with a friend, you are less of a target when you have someone with you.
  • If you have to take a phone call or text message-don't let your guard down and get distracted while shopping.
  • Let someone know where you are going and what time you may be returning.
  • If using a shopping cart, try to secure your purse or bags with the child locking mechanism.
  • Do not carry large amounts of merchandise at one time.
  • Do not carry your social security card or birth certificate in your wallet or purse.
  • Carry only minimum amount of credit cards at one time.
  • If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, contact the police department or the store security officer.
  • Report any suspicious people to the store security or customer service or 911.
  • Keep children secure in a stroller or shopping cart at all times.  Do not allow your children to wonder.
  • Speak with your children about a plan if you were separated while shopping.
  • Make sure your car is in good working order and your cell phone is charged.

Gahanna Teen Spreads Holiday Joy This Season in Gahanna

Michael D'Andrea, a senior at Gahanna Lincoln High School is determined to make sure Gahanna citizens feel the Christmas spirit this holiday season.

The D'Andrea home, decorated with more than 25,000 lights is a must see attraction and is quickly becoming a destination in Gahanna. The lights are synchronized to a number of holiday songs and some OSU Buckeye tunes.

Michael and his family have been featuring the synchronized lights to music show for 5 years now and he has been doing standard Christmas lights since he was six years old. When asked about his inspiration for this annual event, he stated, "I've always loved lights since I was 2 years old and it's just nice to have people drive by and get into the Christmas spirit." Michael plans to attend college for music engineering, but would like to continue to do light displays and grow the event bigger each year.

The D'Andrea family has extended an open invitation to the community to visit their dazzling lights to music show. On weeknights, the lights come on at 5:30 p.m. through 10:00 p.m.  On weekends they turn off at 11:30 p.m. Attendees have the option of visiting the display up close or they may watch and listen to the music from their car by tuning into 88.5 FM.  Donations will also be accepted for GRIN.

For more information, visit the D'Andrea Christmas Display on Facebook or click here to view one of their light shows.
