Second Phase of Gypsy Moth Aerial Treatments to Begin Mid-June

Weather permitting, the Ohio Department of Agriculture will begin its second round of aerial gypsy moth mating disruption treatments the week of June 20th.

The treatment is designed to control the gypsy moth population in central Ohio. Treatments will occur between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Signs will be posted around the treatment areas by 5:00 p.m. the day prior to treatment.

Gypsy moths are invasive insects that defoliate over 300 species of trees and shrubs. In its caterpillar state, the moth feeds on the leaves of trees and shrubs and is especially fond of oak.  A healthy tree can usually withstand only two years of defoliation before it is permanently damaged or dies.

Treatments are administered using a low-flying aircraft that flies just above tree tops. ODA will use Foray (Btk), a naturally occurring bacterium found in the soil that interferes with the caterpillar's feeding cycles.

City to Transition to Franklin County Mass Notification on July 1st

Beginning July 1, 2016, the City of Gahanna will be sending out its emergency notifications through Franklin's county's mass notification system.

ALERT Franklin County is a state-of-the-art emergency warning system that allows residents to receive emergency and service notifications from the City.

Currently, the City uses CodeRED to send out emergency notifications such as boil advisory alerts, weather warnings and other important community news, but that service will no longer be available beginning July 1st.  Residents who desire to receive these updates will need to sign up for the new system.

ALERT Franklin County is customizable and allows participants to choose what kind of community notifications they would like to receive and how they want to receive them. Signing up is quick and easy! To sign up for ALERT Franklin County, click here.
