A duck unstuck! (and his heroic, sooty firefighter)

A lucky duck
Golden first responders are always on the alert to help any local resident who is in need - even the ones with wings! Saturday night, Golden Firefighters braved the "fowl" weather to rescue a duck stuck in a local resident's chimney. The Golden homeowner  called Golden Dispatch and Engine 21 ( a.k.a "Duck Command") quickly responded to help rescue the trapped bird.  Lt. Steinhoff was able to free the duck from around the flue without injuring the animal. Watch the news story of the lucky duck's rescue and visit the Golden Fire-Rescue Facebook page to see more pictures of the daring rescue!

As usual, there's plenty happening in Golden, and we have the scoop for you here. Keep reading to be informed, and have a wonderful week!

Linking Lookout (US 6 & 19th St. Interchange)

Here's what's happening on the Linking Lookout project this week:
  • Utility line relocation - The final overhead lines and power poles along US 6 will be gone this week. Work east of US 6 to underground electrical lines will continue through April.
  • Retaining wall construction to provide space for on- and off-ramps continues in all four quadrants. Kraemer will start installing pre-cast panels for walls in the NW quadrant late this week or early next week.
  • Concrete tunnel that allows the US 6 trail to go under the US 6 west-bound off ramp to 19th Street is complete.
  • Retaining walls on either side of the tunnel will begin when concrete pours are complete.
  • There will continue to be some lane closures on eastbound and westbound US 6 from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. for truck loading. After last Friday's heavier than usual volumes, Kraemer will monitor traffic impacts of Friday closures and adjust construction schedules if necessary.
  • The excavation for the 54" stormsewer started yesterday along West campus Drive. Some intermittent parking closures on the west side of the road will occur.
  • Removal of the existing retaining wall in the northeast quadrant will continue.
  • A CSM geology class will have a tour on Wednesday to learn how soil impacts design and construction methods.
  • CDOT geologists will tour the project on Thursday afternoon to see soil nail construction.
Please note, these plans can change at any time depending on weather and other factors.

A New Life for Linking Lookout Retaining Wall Blocks

Part of this week's Linking Lookout update includes the removal of the existing retaining wall on the northeast quadrant of the project. As residents drive through the project some may ask, what happens to the old materials after removal? In the case of the existing retaining wall, people want to know what will happen to the block? According to the project's general contractor Kraemer North America, it is being carefully removed and salvaged in order to be reused by
Kraemer subcontractors Kelley Trucking, HTM and Slaton Bros.

In many instances, this question is addressed before the contractor bids the project. When Kraemer and their subcontractors offered their bid, one factor that was taken into account was whether or not the building materials could be salvaged and reused. Not only does reusing these materials save on future project costs, it keeps building materials out of landfills and reduces waste. The City of Golden is thrilled that these materials will be put to good use.

New Water Meter
Water Meter Replacement project moves forward in select neighborhoods

The City of Golden water meter replacement project began in late March. Keystone Utility Systems is the City's contractor for this project and is currently working in the Rimrock, East Street and South Ridge areas. A typical residential replacement will take approximately 20 minutes; a commercial replacement may take several hours. If your meter is in a pit outside, you do not need to do anything. If you have an inside set meter you will need to contact Keystone and schedule an appointment. You can schedule via email at  [email protected] or by phone at 1-877-587-2279 between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Keystone has begun sending notices to residents and commercial accounts that will need to set an appointment for the replacement. Appointments are available Monday through Saturday between approximately 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Please remove any items blocking access to the water meter before Keystone arrives to ensure a quick and trouble free replacement.  Please do not call for an appointment until you receive the notice.

Contact Les Major at 303-384-8170 or Keith Mehls at 303-384-8171 with questions regarding this project.

Tree Branch Disposal for Golden Residents

Patrons must have proof of residency to participate and there is free mulch at the lot for Golden residents to load themselves. Community Call-n-Ride Bus Route Changing April 25

By May, the 6th Avenue and 19th Street interchange construction project, known as "Linking Lookout," should be fully underway.  In order to prepare for this traffic interruption, City and RTD staff have developed a plan to temporarily reroute the green circulator bus to minimize the impact on transit passengers.

Beginning on April 25, the circulator bus will be rerouted for approximately 18 months to avoid this intersection and any associated delays due to construction work. This temporary route has now been finalized, as shown on the map to the right. To view a larger version of the map, please visit the City of Golden website.

Please contact the Golden Planning Division at  [email protected] or 303-384-8097 for more information.

Annexation Request west of State Highway 93 at Golden Gate Canyon Rd FAQs

City Council has received a number of emails and inquiries over the past few weeks about a potential request to annex a parcel into the City near Golden Gate Canyon Road and State Highway 93. Although no application has been filed, the community has many questions, so we have prepared a status update, structured as a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document to help explain where we stand with the request at this moment.

Please download the Annexation Request FAQs document below, as well as the map that accompanies it.
If you have further questions about the summary itself, please contact [email protected]. City Council always welcomes comments or suggestions at [email protected].
Golden Library now has expanded hours

Golden Library, along with JCPL's other larger libraries (Arvada, Belmar, Columbine, Evergreen, Lakewood and Standley Lake) now has expanded hours of operation from 51 hours a week to 65 hours a week. The smaller libraries (Conifer, Edgewater and Wheat Ridge) have expanded their hours from 40.5 to 48 hours per week.

Last November, Jefferson County voters approved a mill levy increase for the Library - its first in 29 years. As a result, Library staff members are busy working to restore library services in Jefferson County. Among the improvements are expanded service hours. Over time, you'll also see the Library system investing more in books and materials, updating technology and repairing facilities. Future plans include expanding and enhancing services as time and resources allow.
