Coors
Once upon a time, Golden was primarily known for one thing - the home of Coors beer! While we're still proud to hold that distinction, the last few years have seen an explosion of microbreweries, and tasty restaurants to go with them, making this an even tastier place to live and visit.

On April 27 you can sample some of that deliciousness at the 2nd Annual Taste of Golden, featuring some of the finest food and drink Golden has to offer. Read below for more information.

Also happening this week on April 25 is the 22nd Annual Courage Walk, honoring the strength and courage of the survivors of crime.

There's plenty more happening, from City board meetings to a Purge Your Spurge! event, so read on, and have a great week!

South Golden Road Neighborhood Plan Open House 2

Golden Planning Commission and City staff is in the beginning stage of developing the South Golden Road Neighborhood Plan and would like your input. The neighborhood plan is a subset of the City of Golden Comprehensive Plan . The goal of the plan is to help implement the Value Themes created by the residents of Golden through the Golden Vision 2030 Plan. The Plan will establish parameters for types of transportation improvements, public amenities, and help guide any future land use changes in the area.

While the focus will be on the main commercial corridor of South Golden Road, the larger area (for context) will include the area east of the intersection of Rimrock Drive and S. Golden Road, and the entire area south of S. Golden Road between Johnson Road and Ulysses Street, which extends all the way to US6.

City Staff planned two separate kickoff Open House meetings. The first was held on April 14 from 8 - 10 a.m., to better accommodate commercial business owners in the area. The second will be held in the evening on April 22 from 5 - 8 p.m. for the convenience of residential owners/tenants. The meeting will be held at Faith Lutheran Church at 17701 W. 16th Ave in Golden in classrooms 1 & 2.

Purge Your Spurge! Event

You may have seen it in a neighbor's yard. Maybe you have it in your own yard. And maybe you even think it is somewhat attractive. But the truth is, there is nothing pretty about the noxious weed Myrtle spurge. Jefferson County Weed & Pest needs your help in getting rid of this plant that takes over the landscape and is a danger to people, desirable plants and wildlife.

Myrtle spurge (Euphorbia myrsinites) is a highly invasive 'List A' noxious weed that is required by the Colorado Noxious Weed Act (C.R.S. 35-5.5-101-119) to be eradicated. Myrtle spurge contains a toxic, milky sap which can cause severe skin irritations, including blistering. Hand-pulling, digging, and herbicide applications are effective methods used to control it. It is highly recommended to wear gloves, long sleeves, shoes and eye protection when in contact with Myrtle spurge, as all the plant parts are considered poisonous.

Jefferson County Weed & Pest and City of Golden are co-hosting a Purge Your Spurge! event on Saturday, April 25 at which residents can bring bagged spurge to be disposed of properly. Myrtle spurge that is not bagged, or included with other yard waste cannot be accepted. The first 50 participants to bring their bags of Myrtle spurge will receive a native plant to take home for their yard. In addition, staff and experts will be available to answer questions about noxious weeds.

Event Information

Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., 900 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, CO (Human Services building parking lot). For more information, contact Alicia Doran at 303-271-5989, [email protected], or visit jeffco.us/weed-and-pest/weeds.

Identifying Myrtle Spurge

This weed, also called donkeytail spurge or creeping spurge, is a low-growing perennial with trailing fleshy stems which spreads rapidly to surrounding areas and can 'jump' fences to natural areas and displace native vegetation and reduce forage for wildlife. The leaves are fleshy, blue-green and alternate; the flowers are bright yellow-green, petal-like, and appear from February to May.

22nd Annual Courage Walk

The 22nd Annual Courage Walk offers a chance to honor the strength and courage of survivors in the aftermath of crime - and a time to speak out in unison for crime victims' rights and services.

Eleanor Roosevelt said, "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do." The courage of survivors who "do the thing they think they cannot do" and then find a way to live life again inspires this event.

Where: Jefferson County Courts & Administration Building, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, CO

When: 10 a.m. - Breakfast and Registration; 11 a.m. - Walk begins

The 22nd Annual Courage Walk will begin at the Jefferson County Courts and Administration Building (rain or shine!) and will conclude with a short ceremony at the Courage Garden. The half mile walk is wheelchair accessible. Dogs on leashes are welcome.

Academy attendees will receive information on how crimes such as Domestic Violence and Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs are investigated. They will learn how Traffic Accident Investigators handle car crashes. Attendees will meet a Police K-9 handler and see a demonstration of the K-9 in action as the handler and his dog work as a team. They will learn about the laws that allow an officer to use force, including the use of a Taser, on a suspect.
