Buffalo Bills
Here's some trivia for you! If you enjoyed a long weekend this past Presidents' Day, you can thank the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, signed into law in 1968. Before that, certain holidays, including Washington's Birthday (now celebrated as Presidents' Day!), Memorial Day, and Columbus Day were on fixed dates. Now they always fall on a Monday, ensuring a 3-day weekend for federal employees, and a few lucky others.

Here in Golden, we also have our own local hero to celebrate in February - namely Buffalo Bill! Born on February 26, 1846, William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody is still celebrated here in the west, and you'll see a few birthday parties for the beloved historical figure over the next couple of weeks, starting with a free party on Feb. 21. But there's plenty more to keep you engaged this week in Golden besides parties and trivia. Read on for more information - and have a great week!

Jeffco Public Schools' Budget Survey

Have you ever wondered how decisions about school budgets are made? Be a part of the process - and invite your friends to join! The Jeffco Public Schools Budget Survey is now live, and will be open until Wednesday, February 18. It's important that we receive as much feedback as possible from our community on how we prioritize our district resources.

The survey is available in English, Spanish, Russian, and Vietnamese. Please help get the word out to non-English speaking populations that the survey is available in these three languages as well.

For questions about the Budget Survey, please contact Debbie Rainguet at 303-982-6843.

Brush fire quickly extinguished along 6th Ave.

Fire at 6th Ave. and Tripp If you saw smoke a few days ago on Feb. 15, there was in fact a fire at the other end! The Golden Fire Department responded to a brush fire along 6th Avenue at Tripp Road at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Approximately two acres were burned, but no structures were endangered. Units from Golden, Pleasant View, and Fairmount Fire assisted, and the fire was out in about 2 hours.

Park Pavilion Rentals now available for 2015

Whether you're hosting a family reunion, a wedding reception, or just a day in the park with friends, Golden park pavilions make a great venue for memorable events, with an unbeatable scenic backdrop.

As of February 17, park pavilion rentals for the 2015 season are now available. A couple of things to know before you rent:

  • Only the pavilion and pavilion facilities are available for rent, and not the whole park itself. If another group decides to park on the lawn or play frisbee nearby, they're legally allowed to do so.
  • Renting a pavilion does not exempt you from that park's specific rules. For example, all smoking is now banned in City-owned parks, so make sure your guests know the rules too.
  • You can get an open container permit to accompany your pavilion rental, but it's not automatic, so make sure you complete that form as well!
Finally, rent early! Our pavilions are popular, and it's first come, first served. You can now reserve online. Follow the link below for more information about pavilion rentals.

Hands-on History summer day camp - scholarships available!

Several merit-based scholarships are now available to help kids make real-life history connections at Golden's Hands-on History summer day camp.

Scholarship applications for children aged 6 to 11 are now online and are funded through private donations and the Friends of Golden History Museums. Preference is given to students who demonstrate imagination about history topics through words or drawings.

Students learn about the history of Colorado and Golden through five session themes that include movie making, founding a town, and experimenting with innovation. Groups are age-separated to maximize the students' learning opportunities and enhance the experience for campers.
