New City Manager
In case you missed it last week, Golden has a new City Manager! Stepping into the shoes Mike Bestor has so skillfully filled for the past 21 years would be no easy undertaking for anyone, but Jason Slowinski impressed City Council, employees, and citizens alike during the final candidates' visit a few weeks ago. We look forward to the leadership and experience he'll bring, and extend him and his family a warm welcome!

Learn more about our new city manager and his lovely family on our website where you'll find a video introducing them. Then read on below for more information about what's happening in Golden this week.

The Citizens Budget Advisory Committee (CBAC) was created by the City Manager to advise City staff on the development, implementation, and evaluation of the annual City budget. Anyone in the community is invited to attend.

CBAC meets the third Wednesday of each month, March through November, at 7:30 a.m. in the Golden City Hall Council Chambers.

Dinosaur Express Train

Colorado railroads helped unearth many fossils as railroad tracks were laid. Construction crews often exposed these unusual and fascinating bones as they were digging and laying railroad ties.

Trains were then used to transport these 'stone bones' to museums around Colorado and throughout the United States.

Ride and discover the Dinosaur Express Train on Saturday, July 18 at the Colorado Railroad Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Make fresh tracks through prehistory as children sift through sand for fossils, pan for fools gold, paint dinosaur footprints and enjoy other prehistoric activities. Be greeted by multiple dinosaurs whose skeletons have been found all along the Front Range. Follow the dinosaur tracks around the Museum's 15-acre railyard and listen to the adventurous stories of these prehistoric reptiles during our dinosaur storytime.

Dinosaur Express Train is in collaboration with the Morrison Natural History Museum and Dinosaur Ridge.

Admission is free for Museum Members, $5 for children (under 2 are free), $15 for adults and $10 for seniors (over 60).

Purchase your tickets online at  ColoradoRailroadMuseum.org.

Around Town
Changes to the City's Waste & Recycling Collection Program

In July, City Council selected a new waste hauler to serve 3,400 households in the City's Waste & Recycling collection program for the next five years. Alpine Waste & Recycling was chosen for their low prices and ability to provide current and future services required by the Golden community. Alpine currently serves more than 35,000 households in the metro area and is the largest locally-owned waste & recycling company in Colorado.

Alpine Waste & Recycling Benefits:

  • A webpage just for Golden residents
  • A dedicated phone line where Golden residents can reach one of six customer service representatives, trained to be able to answer questions specific to Golden's program.
  • Automated sustainability reports, exclusive to customers, which track diversion rates and allow comparisons to other households in the area.
  • The ability to accept new materials starting later this fall. Watch for future notice that rigid plastics and formed Styrofoam will soon be accepted with single stream materials.
  • Cleaner-burning compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks with real-time GPS routing software for efficient drive times.

For more information on the program changes, including a timeline for when change will occur, please visit our Trash & Recycling page.

Golden Events Citizens' Survey

In our continuing efforts to help preserve the character of Golden, we are conducting an online citizens' survey about events in the City of Golden in the future.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey at www.GoldenSurvey2015.com. If you are unable to complete the survey online, please call 303-882-8578 or email marc@core-insights.com to request a survey to be mailed to you.

Vaccine, License & Microchip Clinics canceled

Due to coverage, the regularly scheduled Vaccine, Microchip & Licensing Clinics at Foothills Animal Shelter today and Friday, July 17, have been CANCELED.

Foothills Animal Shelter regularly offers these clinics both at the shelter and other convenient locations as a low-cost option for members of the community to keep their pets healthy and happy.

If your pet is due for a shot, or needs to be registered in Jefferson County, visit the Foothills Animal Shelter website for a list of services offered, and a calendar of available clinics.

Remember, it's important to license your pet so it can more easily be returned if lost. Good human.

Show & Tell features new twists on Golden collection

More than 80 favorite objects and photographs in the Golden History Center's Show & Tell exhibit have company this summer, including a newly digitized silent film on view throughout July.

The Four Gun Bandit, released in 1919, stars one-time Golden resident George "Pete" Morrison. Acting in more than 200 films is only part of Morrison's fame. A talented horseman, he is credited with teaching a young John Wayne to ride, as well as driving a team of oxen in Golden parades.

Also on view in Show & Tell: Highlights from the Collection is a partial artist's rendering of the Magic Mountain theme park from 1957 on loan from a private collector. Magic Mountain-the first theme park to mimic Disneyland-was opened in 1960 on the land that is well known as today's Heritage Square. Visible in the rendering are grand ideas that never came to fruition, as well as some that were produced.

Decorative Coors Art Pottery vases made in Golden in the 1930s make up part of the Show & Tell reinstallation, as well as a three-piece coffee maker with a design patent filed by Adolph Coors in 1930.

Finally, a 1925 electric stove from the Golden Waffle Inn has been newly installed in the exhibit, accompanied by a restaurant menu which dates to 1938. Opened in 1927, the establishment was well known for its signature dish of fried chicken and waffles.

Admission to the Golden History Center at 923 10th St. in Golden is $3. Children 6 and under are free. Hours are 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4:30 on Sunday. Call 303-278-3557 for more information or visit GoldenHistory.org.
