You may have seen the recent warning issued byJefferson County Public Health this past weekend. In case you missed it, a dead squirrel was found in Golden near 15th and Jackson that tested positive for Bubonic Plague.

If you've seen the signs around town, here's what you need to know. According to the CDC, Plague is now endemic in the western U.S. since its introduction to this country in 1900, but thanks to modern science, cases among humans are rare. Thankfully, we don't live in the same conditions as folks in the Middle Ages experienced, and we have antibiotics to treat those rare cases that do pop up. Prevention is still the best medicine, however, so use common sense, don't handle dead rodents (squirrels, prairie dogs, etc.) or rabbits, and keep your kids and pets from getting too up-close and curious as well. To learn more about the recent public health update and warning, and for simple precautions to take, view the story on our website along with supporting documents.

Now, moving on to the good stuff! We have some fun events coming up. Golden Farmers' Market is back this weekend after a brief hiatus due to Buffalo Bill Days last Saturday. National Night Out is also around the corner, complete with free hotdogs and fun for the whole family, and Foothills Animal Shelter is having a PAWty!

Whatever you decide to do, stay safe, and have a great week!

The purpose of the August 3 study session is to discuss two 2015 goals the Board listed during their January 27th study session. The first item is establishing and prioritizing an ongoing reconnaissance survey plan, as recommended by the State Historical Preservation Office. The second item is investigating new signage for historic sites, creating historic district signage, and any additional ideas for historic signage.

The Board meets on the first Monday evening of each month in public hearing in the City Council Chambers at 6:30 p.m. Study sessions may be scheduled the third Monday of each month.

National Night Out 2015

The Golden Police Department invites you to join us from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4 in Parfet Park  for free food (grilled hot dogs!) entertainment and fun.

This will be Golden PD's 17th year sponsoring National Night Out. It started in 1984 as an event that brings citizens and law enforcement together in a partnership to form a stronger and safer community. It's designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and generate discussion, education, support and participation in crime prevention efforts.

Lock your doors, turn on your porch light and enjoy a summer evening in the park. This is a great opportunity to bring the family to meet your police officers and support staff, take a close up look at police cars, get helpful crime prevention advice and listen to great music. You may even win a raffle prize!

Keep in mind, we cannot fight crime alone. It takes a community!

Around Town
In Custody Death Investigation

At 10:14 a.m. today, July 28, Golden Police were called to the area of Pine Ridge Road and Hwy 93 to assist the U.S. Marshalls with the arrest of a man who had violated parole in Maryland. When officers arrived at his place of employment, the suspect was seen fleeing the area on foot.

Two other officers who were in the area working on an unrelated incident came upon the suspect as he was walking away and told him to stop. The suspect walked toward the officers and did not do as he was ordered. The officer put him in an arm restraint taking him to the ground in order to handcuff him.

Upon being placed in custody he was moved from the street to the curb where he sat speaking to the officers.  A patrol car was brought over and he was placed into the back seat. Within a few minutes of being in the car, the officers noticed the suspect was sweating profusely becoming unresponsive but breathing. They immediately called for an ambulance. He was taken emergent to St. Anthony's Hospital where he later died.

Initial investigation indicates the suspect had pre-existing medical conditions which contributed to his death.  He was a 51-year old male and convicted as a sexually violent predator with a long criminal history. It does not appear that his death was caused by being taken into custody. The 1st Judicial District Attorney's Office is working in partnership with the Golden Police Department to conduct a thorough investigation.

The name of the suspect is not being released at this time, pending notification of family.

Heritage Road Update

The contractor is pouring curb and sidewalk this week at the Eagle Ridge roundabout. Paving the section between Eagle Ridge and W. 4th, including the Eagle Ridge Roundabout, is scheduled for August 17-18.

Phases 3 and 4 (the road between Kimball and W. 4th, and the W. 4th/Heritage intersection) will be combined into one phase, and will be started after the bike race on August 23; that section of road will remain open until that time.

The waterline tie-in is tentatively scheduled for July 29; KinderCare has been notified as this involves shutting of their water, which will happen only after KinderCare closes for the day.
