Downtown Golden
While City Council meetings are often interesting, they're not usually suspenseful. The one this Thursday, however, has potential to be a nail-biter. As it stands now, Council is all geared up to announce the next Golden City Manager!

Mike Bestor, who has served as Golden's City Manager for 21 years, is retiring in July, and Council has been carefully interviewing potential replacements. The five finalists from the search were brought to Golden on June 19 and each presented to interested citizens, City employees, and City Council. Feedback on the candidates were gathered from citizens and employees alike, and Council took that feedback into consideration when making their decision. To be first in the know, come to the meeting on Thursday to find out who the new City Manager will be.

Due to equipment failure, Council meetings cannot currently be broadcast live on Cable Channel 8. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you can look for the announcement on the front page of the City website on Friday morning.

Read on for more information on other happenings in Golden, and have a great week!

Around Town
City working on a plan to reschedule fireworks show

4th of July Fireworks The City of Golden is working on a plan to reschedule the 4th of July fireworks show for another date this year. As soon as we have a date confirmed, we will let you know.

We are just as disappointed as you that the fireworks had to be cancelled on the 4th. Although the winds might not have felt very strong to those in the parks, it was strong enough to cause big concern for the fireworks company. Tri State Fireworks will not shoot off fireworks in winds above 10 mph. That night the sustained winds were 17 mph. They waited until 10 p.m. in hopes that the winds would die down, but they did not.

Although the cancellation was announced to some of the areas where people gathered, there were some areas that were inadvertently missed. We sincerely apologize for the gap in communication and we promise to do better in the future. Thank you for your patience and we hope to see you in Golden again very soon.

Update on Lions Park & Southridge Park Tennis Court repairs

The tennis courts at Lions Park and Southridge Park are in disrepair, and the City has been working since April to rectify the situation. Unfortunately, there is a very limited number of contractors who do tennis court work.

We thought back in April that we had a contractor lined up to make temporary repairs during the month of May. We also put out an bid request in April for resurfacing work to take place in August after summer programs were completed. To date, however, the temporary repairs have not happened due to weather delays on the contractor's other job sites.

Here we are in July already, so instead of relying on temporary repairs, the City is working to get the permanent resurfacing done as soon as possible. We are hearing this could be as soon as next week.

We appreciate everyone's patience with the situation, and look forward to offering our citizens resurfaced tennis courts very soon!

Utility Replacement program update
  • Construction continues on Texas and Alaska Streets for water main replacement.
  • The Utilities Division responded to a water main break on Washington Ave between 14th and 15th Street, yesterday. There is now concern that portions of Washington pavement could be undermined and crews will be investigating the extent.
  • Clear Creek Trail west of US 6 has been temporarily repaired and is opened to the headgates. Permanent repairs are being evaluated.
