Help us keep our Community Calendar up-to-date. If you are sponsoring a not-for-profit event that takes place in Golden and welcomes everyone, we want to know about it. Fill out our event submission form and if it fits our editorial standard, we'll add it to the calendar.

Say hello to your 2016 City Council! Last Thursday we said goodbye to veteran Councilor, Marcie Miller, and welcomed Casey Brown to the office of District 2 Councilor. We also welcomed back Mayor Marjorie Sloan and District 1 Councilor, Saoirse Charis-Graves, who were both re-elected this past November. Just a reminder, Council usually meets in regular session every second and fourth Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers, which are located in City Hall. That's usually. Sometimes, like this month, the schedule gets thrown off due to holidays or other conflicts, so be sure and check the Community Calendar before you head to a meeting. This week the Council will be meeting in Study Session (which you're also welcome to attend but they won't be voting on anything), then meet in regular session next week.

This week is also the North Clear Creek Neighborhoods Plan Open House, so if you are interested in the future of this area of Golden, be sure to attend the meeting tomorrow. Details below!

Keep reading for more information on what's happening in Golden, and have a great week!

Jeffco Innovator's Workshop

How can a wide array of technical artifacts and technological methods be made accessible to people, regardless of their backgrounds? Inspired by his early research experience at Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and MIT, Randy Tagg will describe 25 years of effort to develop an environment where sophisticated technology can be made approachable so that innovators can build a bridge between good ideas and their practical realization.

There are three major components: (1) a "library" of physical resources (e.g. motors, sensors, optics, electronics, instrumentation) that can be pulled off the shelf for use in prototype development, (2) a method for learning "on demand" how to employ particular technologies, using physics as a foundation for understanding not just the "how" but also the "why," and (3) a community of like-minded individuals and experienced guides to provide encouragement and advice.

Randy has created various realizations of this combination, including the Community Prototyping Lab in association with a nonprofit that provided business development assistance, and the Innovation Hyperlab in association with Aurora Public Schools. He will describe new plans to take this effort to the next level as he looks for a new home for a large stockpile of technical resources and create a web-based curriculum for independent learners seeking specific technical competencies.

The JeffCo Innovators' Workshop is a public service activity of the 501c3 IX Power Foundation and the City of Golden's Economic Development Commission.

The meeting is free, but space is limited so  please RSVP.

Linking Lookout Community Kick-off Meeting

Linking Lookout Logo Ready or not, construction will begin on the long-awaited intersection of US 6 and 19th Street project (Linking Lookout) in late January, or early February, and we know the community has questions.

On January 28, meet with City Staff at 5:30 p.m. at the Fossil Trace Golf Club to learn the latest about the project - what exactly will be happening, the true expected impacts to traffic, and what the City is doing to make it as smooth as possible for our residents, visitors, and passers-through. This is a great opportunity to get the most up-to-date information about the upcoming project and get your questions answered.

In the meantime, you can also find lots of information on our website Linking Lookout pages. Hope to see you January 28!
Around Town
Your passport to the world starts in Golden

If you're looking forward to traveling abroad in 2016, you'll need to make sure your passport is in order. The City of Golden can help! Did you know Golden accepted  922 passport applications in 2015? That averages out to almost 18 passports per week! And this year is starting off even busier; over the first 8 days of the year, we've already accepted 55 applications.

Because we get so many requests, appointments are strongly encouraged. Walk-ins will be accommodated as scheduling allows, but unfortunately, walk-in service is not guaranteed. If we're super busy when you stop by, you may be in for a wait. The simple solution is to call (303) 384-8000 to make your appointment ahead of time, and save more time for packing and travel-planning.

Learn more about the passport application process on our website, and have fun planning your next trip abroad!

Golden Well-Being Index Study

The City of Golden participated in the Gallup-Healthways Well-being Survey in May and June of 2015 and had over 500 responses. Well-being was defined as a life well lived, all the things that are important to us, what we think about and how we experience our lives. Well-being is comprised of five elements including: Purpose, liking what you do each day and being motivated to accomplish your goals; Social, having supportive relationships and love in your life; Financial, managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security; Community, liking where you live, feeling safe, and having pride in your community; Physical, having good health and enough energy to get things done daily.

Join us for a presentation of the findings from Golden's Well-Being Index Study on Saturday, January 30, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the City Council Chambers, 911 10 th Street. The presentation will feature reports from Gallup Healthways, the Colorado School of Public Health and the Tobacco Free Jeffco Alliance. Share your thoughts with other community members and ideas for future healthy initiatives.
